Abstract

A device for inducing weight loss in a patient includes a tubular prosthesis self-expandable from a collapsed position in which the prosthesis has a first diameter to an expanded position in which the prosthesis has a second, larger, diameter. In a method for inducing weight loss, the prosthesis is placed in the collapsed position and inserted into a stomach of a patient. The prosthesis is allowed to self-expand from the collapsed position to the expanded position and into contact with the walls of the stomach, where it induces feelings of satiety and/or inhibits modulation of satiety-controlling factors such as Ghrelin.

Claims (18)

1. A method for implanting an intestinal tube in a patient, comprising:

positioning the intestinal tube in an intestine of the patient such that the entire intestinal tube is distal to a pylorus, wherein the intestinal tube includes a self-expandable wire structure and a polymeric sleeve; and

allowing the wire structure to expand against a wall of the intestine.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wire structure includes at least one wave-shaped ring.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric sleeve encapsulates the wire structure.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning the intestinal tube includes inserting the intestinal tube into a mouth, through an esophagus, and through a stomach.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of a wall of the polymeric sleeve is configured to prevent passage of material though the portion of the wall of the polymeric sleeve.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intestinal tube is positioned distal to the ampulla of Vater.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wire structure includes nitinol.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric sleeve includes silicone.

9. A method for implanting an intestinal tube in a patient, comprising:

positioning an intestinal tube in an intestine of the patient such that the entire intestinal tube is distal to a pylorus, wherein the intestinal tube includes a polymeric sleeve and a self-expandable wire structure, the self-expandable wire structure including at least one wave-shaped ring;

allowing the wire structure to expand against a wall of the intestine; and

securing the wire structure to the wall of the intestine with a plurality of barbs.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the polymeric sleeve is positioned on an exterior or an interior of the wire structure.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the polymeric sleeve encapsulates the wire structure.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising a valve to restrict a flow of material through an interior lumen of the intestinal tube.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the intestinal tube has a length of at least 20 cm.
