Abstract

Systems and methods for identifying content in electronic messages are provided. An electronic message may include certain content. The content is detected and analyzed to identify any metadata. The metadata may include a numerical signature characterizing the content. A thumbprint is generated based on the numerical signature. The thumbprint may then be compared to thumbprints of previously received messages. The comparison allows for classification of the electronic message as spam or not spam.

Claims (34)

1. A method for identifying content in electronic messages, the method comprising:

receiving a first electronic message over a communication network;

extracting a plurality of numerical metadata values characterizing one or more images in the first electronic message, wherein each numerical metadata value of the plurality of numerical metadata values describes at least one of a width value, a height value, a color table color location value, a color intensity value, or some combination thereof;

generating a plurality of thumbprints based on the extracted plurality of numerical metadata values, wherein each thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints is based on at least a subset of the plurality of numerical metadata values and one or more numerical adjustment values falling within a predefined range, each numerical adjustment value adjusting one of the numerical metadata values, wherein each thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints is distinct from the rest of the plurality of thumbprints because each thumbprint is based on a different combination of numerical metadata values and numerical adjustment values;

identifying a matching thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints, the matching thumbprint matching a second message thumbprint that is based on a second message; and

classifying the second message as spam.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising classifying the second message as pornographic content.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising classifying the first message as spam.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising receiving a classification input from a user interface, wherein the first message is classified into the first classification category based on the classification input.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the second message.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein receiving a second electronic message over the communication network includes intercepting the second message, the second message directed to a recipient device.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising compressing the plurality of thumbprints.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving a first electronic message over the communication network includes intercepting the first message, the first message directed to a recipient device.

9. A system for identifying content in electronic messages, the system comprising:

a communication transceiver that receives a first electronic message over a communication network;

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory and to the communication transceiver, wherein execution of instructions stored in the memory by the processor:

extracts a plurality of numerical metadata values characterizing one or more images in the first electronic message, wherein each numerical metadata value of the plurality of numerical metadata values describes at least one of a width value, a height value, a color table color location value, a color intensity value, or some combination thereof,

generates a plurality of thumbprints based on the extracted plurality of numerical metadata values, wherein each thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints is based on at least a subset of the plurality of numerical metadata values and one or more numerical adjustment values falling within a predefined range, each numerical adjustment value adjusting one of the numerical metadata values, wherein each thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints is distinct from the rest of the plurality of thumbprints because each thumbprint is based on a different combination of numerical metadata values and numerical adjustment values,

identifies a matching thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints, the matching thumbprint matching a second message thumbprint that is based on a second message, and

classifies the second message as spam.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein execution of the instruction by the processor further classifies the second message as pornographic content.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein execution of the instructions by the processor further classifies the first message as spam.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a user interface that receives a classification input, wherein the first message is classified into the first classification category based on the classification input.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the communication transceiver receives the second message.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the communication transceiver receives the second message by intercepting the second message, the second message directed to a recipient device.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein execution of the instructions by the processor further compresses the plurality of thumbprints.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the communication transceiver receives the first message by intercepting the first message, the first message directed to a recipient device.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having instructions embodied thereon, the instructions executable by a processor of a gateway device communicatively coupled between a client and a responder to perform a method of identifying content in electronic messages, the method comprising:

receiving a first electronic message over a communication network;

extracting a plurality of numerical metadata values characterizing one or more images in the first electronic message, wherein each numerical metadata value of the plurality of numerical metadata values describes at least one of a width value, a height value, a color table color location value, a color intensity value, or some combination thereof;

generating a plurality of thumbprints based on the extracted plurality of numerical metadata values, wherein each thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints is based on at least a subset of the plurality of numerical metadata values and one or more numerical adjustment values falling within a predefined range, each numerical adjustment value adjusting one of the numerical metadata values, wherein each thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints is distinct from the rest of the plurality of thumbprints because each thumbprint is based on a different combination of numerical metadata values and numerical adjustment values;

identifying a matching thumbprint of the plurality of thumbprints, the matching thumbprint matching a second message thumbprint that is based on a second message; and

classifying the second message as spam.
