Abstract

The present disclosure includes a system and article of manufacture for a door assembly for rolling and unrolling, or retracting and extending, a door curtain. The door assembly may include various mechanisms to protect a door curtain from wear and abrasion, as well as muffle noise associated with the operation of the door curtain. The door assembly may comprise a curtain shaft. A door curtain may roll and/or unroll (e.g., open and/or close) on the curtain shaft. The door assembly may further include an insulator shaft, which may receive or hold a door curtain insulator or insulators. A door curtain insulator may attach to the insulator shaft as well as the curtain shaft and/or door curtain itself. In operation, as the door curtain is rolled up, one or more lengths of insulator may be unrolled from the insulator shaft and layered, or interleaved, between consecutive layers of rolled up door curtain. Similarly, as the door curtain is unrolled, one or more lengths of insulator may be rolled up or wound about the insulator shaft, such that no insulator travels with the curtain as it unrolls towards a closed position. The door assembly may also include a mechanism for compensating for a difference between an angular speed of a door curtain on a curtain shaft and an angular speed of a door curtain insulator on an insulator shaft.

Claims (34)

1. A roll-up door comprising:

a truss cage housing;

a curtain shaft installed within the truss cage housing, wherein rotation of the curtain shaft raises and lowers a door curtain along a vertical path;

an insulator shaft installed within the truss cage housing, the insulator shaft disposed aft of and below the curtain shaft; and

a drive motor configured to drive the curtain shaft and the insulator shaft,

wherein the door curtain is stored on the curtain shaft within the truss cage housing in response to the door curtain being raised to a stowed position,

wherein an insulator comprising a woven fabric material is stored on the insulator shaft within the truss cage housing in response to the door curtain being lowered to a deployed position,

wherein the insulator is disposed along and between at least two layers of the door curtain when the door curtain is stored on the curtain shaft.

2. The roll up door of claim 1 further comprising a recoil assembly disposed on a side of the truss cage housing.

3. The roll up door of claim 2 , wherein the recoil assembly is operatively coupled to the curtain shaft and the insulator shaft and configured to compensate for a difference in angular speed between the curtain shaft and the insulator shaft.

4. The roll up door of claim 2 , wherein the recoil assembly comprises:

a recoil assembly sprocket;

a hub assembly that is coupled to the insulator shaft; and

a spring that is elastically coupled between the hub assembly and the recoil assembly sprocket.

5. The roll up door of claim 1 , wherein the truss cage comprises a hatch that provides access to at least one of the curtain shaft or the insulator shaft.

6. The roll up door of claim 1 , wherein the drive motor is mounted to the truss cage.

7. The roll up door of claim 1 , wherein the truss cage housing is configured to mount to a frame.

8. The roll up door of claim 7 , a wherein the door curtain is deployable from the curtain shaft and out of the truss cage housing to the frame.

9. The roll up door of claim 7 , wherein the insulator shaft winds up the insulator within the truss cage housing in response to the door curtain deploying to the frame.

10. A door assembly comprising:

a door housing;

a curtain shaft disposed within the door housing, wherein rotation of the curtain shaft raises and lowers a door curtain along a vertical path; and

an insulator shaft disposed within the door housing and located behind the curtain shaft,

wherein the door curtain is stored on the curtain shaft within the door housing in response to the door curtain being raised to a stowed position, and

wherein an insulator comprising a woven fabric material is stored on the insulator shaft within the door housing in response to the door curtain being lowered to a deployed position,

wherein the insulator is disposed along and between at least two layers of the door curtain when the door curtain is stored on the curtain shaft.

11. The door assembly of claim 10 , wherein the insulator shaft is disposed below the curtain shaft.

12. The door assembly of claim 10 , wherein the door assembly is configured to mount to a frame.

13. The door assembly of claim 10 further comprising a recoil assembly that mounts on the door housing.

14. The door assembly of claim 10 , wherein a recoil assembly is operatively coupled to the curtain shaft and the insulator shaft and configured to compensate for a difference in angular speed between the curtain shaft and the insulator shaft.

15. The door assembly of claim 14 , wherein the recoil assembly comprises:

a recoil assembly sprocket;

a hub assembly that is coupled to the insulator shaft; and

a spring that is elastically coupled between the hub assembly and the recoil assembly sprocket.
