Abstract

Systems in accordance with embodiments of the invention can perform parallax detection and correction in images captured using array cameras. Due to the different viewpoints of the cameras, parallax results in variations in the position of objects within the captured images of the scene. Methods in accordance with embodiments of the invention provide an accurate account of the pixel disparity due to parallax between the different cameras in the array, so that appropriate scene-dependent geometric shifts can be applied to the pixels of the captured images when performing super-resolution processing. In a number of embodiments, generating depth estimates considers the similarity of pixels in multiple spectral channels. In certain embodiments, generating depth estimates involves generating a confidence map indicating the reliability of depth estimates.

5. The camera array of claim 2 , wherein the cost function evaluates similarity of neighborhoods of pixels using a metric that measures the similarity of the relative values of two sets of pixels.

6. The camera array of claim 5 , wherein the measure of the similarity of the relative values of two sets of pixels is an entropy measure.

7. The camera array of claim 2 , further comprising adjusting a weighting applied to a color channel in the cost function based on a map of a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) generated with respect to the reference image.

8. The camera array of claim 7 , wherein a strong SNR in the reference image is used to reduce the weighting applied to the other color channels.

9. The camera array of claim 8 , wherein generating the SNR comprises estimating SNR along epipolar lines which connects a pixel location (x,y) in an alternative viewpoint to the reference viewpoint.

10. The camera array of claim 9 , further comprising searching the epipolar lines for regions of high SNR.
