Abstract

A system and method of confirming administration of medication is provided. The method comprises the steps of receiving information identifying a particular medication prescription regimen, determining one or more procedures for administering such prescription regimen and identifying one or more activity sequences associated with such procedures. Activity sequences of actual administration of such prescription regimen are captured and then compared to the identified activity sequences to determine differences therebetween. A notice is provided if differences are determined.

Claims (62)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing on a display of a local device one or more instruction prompts instructing a user how to follow one or more predefined movement sequences associated with proper administration of a medication according to a medication prescription regimen;

capturing, from the local device, one or more video activity sequences of a user following the one or more instruction prompts instructing the user how to follow the one or more predefined movement sequences;

storing the captured one or more video activity sequences to a non-transitory computer readable storage medium of the local device;

determining that there are differences between the stored one or more video activity sequences and the one or more predefined movement sequences;

determining that the user has failed to properly perform the one or more predefined movement sequences based on the differences; and

providing one or more further instruction prompts on the display of the local device in real time responsive to determining that the user has failed to properly perform the one or more predefined movement sequences.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that there are differences between the stored one or more activity sequences and the one or more predefined movement sequences is performed by a computer processor of the local device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that there are differences between the stored one or more activity sequences and the one or more predefined movement sequences is performed at a location remote from the local device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

before capturing the one or more video activity sequences of the user following the one or more instruction prompts, determining an identity of the medication to be administered;

determining whether the identified medication is the same medication associated with the medication prescription regimen; and

issuing a warning responsive to determining that the identified medication is not the same medication associated with the medication prescription regimen.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein issuing the warning includes contacting a medical professional.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

capturing, from the local device, video activity sequences of the user following the one or more instruction prompts instructing the user to perform the one or more predefined movement sequences during multiple instances of administration;

transmitting the captured video activity sequences to a remote server location;

further analyzing the captured video activity sequences by a computer processor of the remote server location by comparing each of the captured video activity sequences to the identified predefined movement sequences to determine differences therebetween, thereby automatically determining by the computer processor of the remote server location that one or more additional activities of the video activity sequence have been improperly performed across one or more of the multiple instances of administration including ingestion; and

providing an analysis of adherence to a particular prescription regimen and the additional activities of the video activity sequence in accordance with the determination of the multiple instances of administration.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising providing additional instructions to a medication administrator in accordance with the provided analysis.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing additional instructions to a medication administrator.

9. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving information identifying a particular medication prescription regimen provided by an authenticated medical professional;

determining one or more procedures for administration of the medication in accordance with the identified medication prescription regimen from one or more databases;

modifying the one or more procedures by the processor in response to an instruction received from the authenticated medical professional;

providing on a display of the local device a set of interactive instructions and associated instruction prompts instructing a user how to follow one or more predefined movement sequences associated with the determined one or more medication administration procedures for a current medication administration session;

capturing, from a video capture device of the local device, one or more video activity sequences of the user following the set of interactive instructions and instruction prompts;

storing the captured one or more video activity sequences to a non-transitory computer readable storage medium;

comparing, in real time, the one or more stored video activity sequences to the predefined movement sequences to determine differences therebetween; and

providing one or more further interactive instructions to the user on the display of the local device in real time responsive to determining the differences between the one or more stored video activity sequences and the predefined movement sequences, the one or more further interactive instructions further instructing a user how to properly administer the medication during the current medication administration session in accordance with the one or more predefined movement sequences.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising performing a statistical analysis of the determined differences between the one or more stored video activity sequences and the predefined movement sequences.

11. A system for confirming administration of medication, comprising:

a storage device associated with a local device storing a set of instructions for administering medication and one or more identified predefined movement sequences associated with the set of instructions;

a processor associated with the local device;

wherein the processor is configured to perform operations comprising:

displaying on an output device associated with the processor one or more instruction prompts associated with the set of instructions, wherein the one or more instruction prompts instruct a user how to follow the one or more identified predefined movement sequences;

capturing, from a video capture device associated with the local device, one or more video activity sequences of the user following the one or more instruction prompts displayed on the output device during a current medication administration session;

storing the captured one or more video activity sequences to the storage device associated with the local device;

comparing in real time the stored one or more video activity sequences to the one or more identified predefined movement sequences;

determining that there are differences between the stored one or more video activity sequences and the one or more identified predefined movement sequences;

determining that the user has failed to properly perform the one or more predefined movement sequences based on the differences; and

displaying in real time, on the output device, one or more further instructions, the one or more further instructions further instructing the user how to properly administer the medication in accordance with the one or more predefined movement sequences during the current medication administration session.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to identify a medication being used from the captured one or more video activity sequences.

13. A computer-implemented method comprising:

determining one or more procedures for administering a prescription regimen in accordance with prescription information provided by an authenticated medical professional;

receiving a modification of the procedures by the authenticated medical professional;

providing, to an output device, a set of instructions including one or more instruction prompts instructing a user how to perform a predefined movement sequence in accordance with which the prescription regimen is to be administered;

capturing visual indicia, by a video capture device associated with the local device, of the user following the one or more instruction prompts and performing the predefined movement sequence;

storing the captured visual indicia to a non-transitory computer readable storage medium of the local device;

comparing in real time the stored captured visual indicia to the predefined visual indicia by a computer processor associated with the local device to determine differences therebetween;

determining that the user has failed to perform the predefined movement sequence based on the determined differences; and

providing, responsive to determining that the user has failed to perform the predefined movement sequences, one or more further instructions, to the output device in real time.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the visual indicia comprises one or more video activity sequences.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising

capturing, by the video capture device, visual indicia of activity of the user before the user administers the medication; and

providing a reminder to the user, before the user administers the medication, at least in part in accordance with the captured visual indicia.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising capturing, by the video capture device and before the user administers the medication, visual indicia of activity of the user, wherein the captured visual indicia comprises evidence of patient consent.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

capturing, by the video capture device and after the user administers the medication, visual indicia of activity of the user;

providing notification to a medical service provider of the activity; and

modifying at least one aspect of a prescription regimen in accordance with the captured visual indicia after the user administers the medication.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the captured visual indicia of the activity of the user after the user administers the medication comprises an adverse reaction to the medication.
