Abstract

A system for monitoring a patient includes an inflatable cuff configured to at least partially occlude an artery of the patient, and a sensor configured to determine a first parameter associated with the at least partially occluded artery and to generate an output signal indicative of the first parameter. The system also includes a processor configured to receive the output signal and information indicative of an occlusion efficiency of the cuff. The processor is configured to determine a hemodynamic parameter of the patient based on the output signal and the information.

Claims (51)

1. One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media storing instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processors to perform a method of monitoring a patient, the method comprising:

receiving information comprising an occlusion efficiency particular to a respective inflatable cuff, the respective cuff being of a first type;

causing inflation of the respective cuff while the respective cuff is disposed about a limb of the patient, wherein causing inflation of the respective cuff causes the respective cuff to at least partially occlude an artery disposed within the limb;

causing a sensor in communication with the one or more processors to determine a parameter associated with the artery of the patient, wherein the parameter is determined while the artery is at least partially occluded by the cuff; and

determining a hemodynamic parameter of the patient based on the parameter and the occlusion efficiency,

wherein the occlusion efficiency:

quantifies an effectiveness, relative to other inflatable cuffs of the first type, with which air pressure within the respective cuff is transferred to force on the artery; and

is used by the one or more processors as an input value in determining the hemodynamic parameter.

2. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises

causing inflation of the cuff to a reference pressure, using an inflation device, while the cuff is disposed about a test structure, and

causing a sensor to determine a pressure applied to the test structure, by the cuff, while the cuff is inflated to the reference pressure, wherein

receiving information comprising the occlusion efficiency comprises determining the occlusion efficiency based on the pressure applied to the test structure.

3. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

receiving information indicative of an identification parameter particular to the cuff, the identification parameter being indicative of at least one of a type, size, design, model, style, part number, model number, or serial number of the cuff, wherein

receiving information comprising the occlusion efficiency comprises retrieving the occlusion efficiency from the one or more computer-readable storage media at least partially based on the identification parameter.

4. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises determining receipt of an incorrect occlusion efficiency, the instructions causing the one or more processors to prohibit a hemodynamic parameter calculation at least partly in response to determining receipt of the incorrect occlusion efficiency.

5. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

receiving additional information indicative of at least one of an empirically derived variable, a cumulative time associated with inflating the cuff to a reference volume, a volume of the cuff while the artery is at least partially occluded by the cuff, a surface area of contact between the cuff and the patient while the artery is at least partially occluded by the cuff, or a value indicative of a size of the cuff; and

calculating the hemodynamic parameter based at least partly on the occlusion efficiency and the additional information.

6. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 1 , wherein the information is entered by a user via an input device in communication with the one or more processors.

7. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises causing a communication module in communication with the one or more processors to display the hemodynamic parameter.

8. A method of manufacturing an apparatus for monitoring a patient, the method comprising:

providing an inflatable cuff, the inflatable cuff being of a first type and being configured to: at least partially occlude an artery of the patient when the inflatable cuff is disposed around a limb of the patient and is inflated by an inflation device;

determining an occlusion efficiency particular to the inflatable cuff, wherein the occlusion efficiency:

is determined independent of the inflation device, and

quantifies an effectiveness, of the inflatable cuff relative to other inflatable cuffs of the first type, of occluding the artery of the patient during a determination of a hemodynamic parameter of the patient, and wherein determining the occlusion efficiency includes:

inflating the inflatable cuff to a reference pressure, using an additional inflation device, and without the inflatable cuff being disposed around the limb, and

determining a parameter associated with the inflatable cuff while the inflatable cuff is inflated to the reference pressure, the occlusion efficiency being determined based on the parameter;

configuring an information feature to indicate the determined occlusion efficiency; and

physically connecting the information feature to a component of the inflatable cuff.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the occlusion efficiency further includes:

inflating a reference cuff, different from the inflatable cuff and with the additional inflation device, to the reference pressure while the reference cuff is disposed about a test structure;

measuring a first pressure, applied by the reference cuff to the test structure, when the reference cuff is inflated to the reference pressure, wherein:

inflating the inflatable cuff comprises inflating the inflatable cuff to the reference pressure, using the additional inflation device, while the inflatable cuff is disposed about the test structure, and

determining the parameter comprises measuring a second pressure, applied by the inflatable cuff to the test structure, when the inflatable cuff is inflated to the reference pressure; and

calculating a difference between the first and second pressures.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein physically connecting the information feature to the component of the inflatable cuff comprises disposing the information feature on an outer surface of the inflatable cuff such that the information feature is exposed when the inflatable cuff is disposed around the limb of the patient.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the information feature is configured to provide the occlusion efficiency to a control module separate from the apparatus, the control module being configured to:

receive the occlusion efficiency,

receive a signal indicative of a parameter associated with the artery, wherein the parameter is determined when the artery is at least partially occluded by the inflatable cuff, and

determine the hemodynamic parameter of the patient based on the signal and using the occlusion efficiency as the input.

12. A method, comprising:

determining an occlusion efficiency unique to a particular inflatable blood pressure cuff, the inflatable cuff being of a first type of blood pressure cuff, wherein determining the occlusion efficiency includes:

inflating the inflatable cuff to a reference pressure, using a first inflation device, while the inflatable cuff is disposed about a test structure,

determining a first pressure applied by the inflatable cuff to the test structure while the inflatable cuff is inflated to the reference pressure, and

determining a difference between the first pressure and a second pressure, the second pressure being applied by a reference cuff to the test structure while the reference cuff is inflated to the reference pressure by the first inflation device,

the reference cuff being of the first type, and

the occlusion efficiency being determined based on the difference;

inflating the inflatable cuff, using a second inflation device different from the first inflation device, while the inflatable cuff is disposed about a limb of a patient, wherein inflating the inflatable cuff using the second inflation device causes the inflatable cuff to at least partially occlude an artery of the patient disposed within the limb;

determining a parameter associated with the artery while the artery is at least partially occluded by the inflatable cuff; and

determining a hemodynamic parameter of the patient based on the parameter and the occlusion efficiency.
