Abstract

A wound treatment appliance is provided for treating all or a portion of a wound. In some embodiments, the appliance includes an impermeable flexible overlay for applying a reduced pressure to the covered portion of the wound. The wound treatment appliance may also include a vacuum system to supply reduced pressure to the wound in the area under the flexible overlay, a wound packing means to prevent overgrowth of the wound or to encourage growth of the wound tissue into an absorbable matrix including the wound packing means, a suction drain, a collection chamber to collect and store exudate from the wound, and/or a suction bulb which may be used to provide a source of reduced pressure to an impermeable overlay that covers all or a portion of the wound. Finally, methods are provided for using various embodiments of the wound treatment appliance.

Claims (17)

1. A method of treating a wound, comprising:

positioning an appliance over at least a portion of the wound, the appliance comprising a port and an overlay defining a base end opening;

forming a sealed volume under the overlay;

delivering reduced pressure from a reduced pressure source to the sealed volume under the overlay via the port;

collapsing a top portion of the overlay in an approximate direction of the wound when reduced pressure is delivered to the sealed volume under the overlay such that at least one fold forms in a portion of the overlay.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein collapsing a portion of the overlay provides a visual indication that reduced pressure is being supplied to the wound.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein reduced pressure is delivered from the reduced pressure source to the sealed volume under the overlay via a conduit connected to the port.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the conduit comprises a first end adapted to be inserted into the port and a second end fluidically connected to the reduced pressure supply source.

The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering reduced pressure from the reduced pressure source to the sealed volume under the overlay further comprises supplying reduced pressure through a first sealed volume when the portion of the overlay is not collapsed and a second sealed volume when the portion of the overlay is collapsed.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first sealed volume is greater than the second sealed volume.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the overlay comprises an approximately circular shape.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the base end opening comprises an approximately circular shape.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the overlay adjacent to the perimeter of the base end opening comprises an adhesive.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the overlay comprises a polymer.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the overlay comprises a vinyl material.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collapsing portion of the overlay forms an acute angle relative to a patient's body when the portion of the overlay is collapsed.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reduced pressure supply source comprises a vacuum pump.
