Abstract

A compressor is provided and may include a shell, a motor assembly, a driveshaft, a pump housing, and a pumping mechanism. The motor assembly may be disposed within the shell. The driveshaft may be drivingly engaged with the motor assembly. The pump housing may be rotatably supported by the driveshaft for rotation relative to the shell. The pumping mechanism may be disposed within the pump housing and rotating with or orbiting about the driveshaft.

Claims (37)

1. compressor comprising:

a shell;

a motor assembly disposed within the shell;

a driveshaft drivingly engaged with the motor assembly;

a compression mechanism driven by the driveshaft;

a pump housing rotatably supported by the driveshaft for rotation relative to the driveshaft and relative to the shell; and

a pumping mechanism disposed within the pump housing and in driving engagement with the driveshaft.

2. The compressor of claim 1 , further comprising a drag member supported by the pump housing and at least partially disposed within a fluid.

3. The compressor of claim 2 , wherein the drag member extends radially outwardly from the pump housing.

4. The compressor of claim 2 , wherein the drag member includes a plurality of outward surfaces, the plurality of outward surfaces having a surface roughness.

5. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the pump housing is not supported by the shell.

6. The compressor of claim 2 , wherein the pumping mechanism applies a first torque on the pump housing in a first direction, and the drag member applies a second torque on the pump housing in a second direction, the second direction being opposite the first direction.

7. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the motor assembly includes a rotor and a stator, the rotor disposed radially outwardly relative to the stator and fixed for rotation with the driveshaft.

8. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the motor assembly includes a rotor and a stator, the rotor disposed radially inwardly relative to the stator and fixed for rotation with the driveshaft.

9. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the motor assembly includes a lubricant retention member disposed annularly about the driveshaft.

10. The compressor of claim 9 , wherein the lubricant retention member includes an axially extending portion and a radially inwardly extending portion.

11. The compressor of claim 9 , wherein the motor assembly further includes a lubricant drain having a first end in fluid communication with the shell and a second end in fluid communication with a space at least partially defined by the lubricant retention member.

12. The compressor of claim 11 , wherein the lubricant drain is inclined relative to a rotational axis of the driveshaft.

13. A compressor comprising:

a shell having a fluid disposed therein;

a motor assembly disposed within the shell and drivingly engaged with a driveshaft;

a compression mechanism driven by the driveshaft;

a pump housing rotatably disposed within the shell for rotation relative to the driveshaft and relative to the shell; and

at least one pumping mechanism rotatably disposed within the pump housing such that the at least one pumping mechanism is in driving engagement with the driveshaft.

14. The compressor of claim 13 , further comprising a drag feature extending outwardly from the pump housing.

15. The compressor of claim 14 , wherein the drag feature is at least partially disposed within the fluid.

16. The compressor of claim 13 , wherein the at least one pumping mechanism applies a first torque on the pump housing in a first direction, and the fluid applies a second torque on the pump housing in a second direction, the second direction being opposite the first direction.

17. The compressor of claim 13 , wherein the pump housing is not supported by the shell.

18. The compressor of claim 13 , wherein the motor assembly includes a lubricant retention member disposed annularly about the driveshaft and supported by the motor assembly.

19. The compressor of claim 18 , wherein the lubricant retention member includes an axially extending portion and a radially inwardly extending portion.

20. A compressor comprising:

a shell;

a motor assembly disposed within the shell;

a driveshaft drivingly engaged with the motor assembly;

a pump assembly disposed within the shell and supported by the driveshaft, the pump assembly including a pump housing that rotates relative to the driveshaft and relative to the shell;

a flexible conduit having a first end and a second end, the first end coupled to the pump assembly, and the second end in fluid communication with the shell; and

a rotation restricting device supported by the flexible conduit near the second end.
