Abstract

An improved vibrating orthodontic device is provided wherein motor speed is controlled by capacitive sensor, and thus lacks moving parts that are required by encoder use. The improved device also uses a tungsten offset weight, reducing size by more than 50%, yet still produces the needed force. The device is thus smaller, lighter and more robust.

Claims (34)

1. An orthodontic remodeling device, comprising:

a) an extraoral vibratory source comprising:

i) an actuator, where said actuator is an offset weight motor;

ii) a processor that controls said actuator and captures and transmits device usage data;

iii) a power source that drives said actuator;

b) an intraoral attachment consisting essentially of a bite plate allowing for contact with occlusal surfaces and allowing contact with upper and lower buccal surfaces of a patient's teeth, wherein said patient biting on said bite plate holds said orthodontic remodeling device in place during use;

c) said vibratory source being coupled to the intraoral attachment;

d) wherein said orthodontic remodeling device vibrates at a single frequency selected to be between 0.1 Hz and 400 Hz, and wherein when used together with braces or aligners for 20 minutes daily said device accelerates tooth movement as compared to a patient not using said device;

wherein a speed of said offset weight motor is controlled with a capacitive sensor comprising one or more header pins having a weak electrostatic (ES) field that is disrupted when said offset weight passes by, said header pins operably coupled to a solid state ES field sensor operably coupled to the processor, wherein said processor detects said speed by detecting said disrupted ES field, and controls said speed such that said speed varies by less than 2 Hz.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said offset weight on said offset weight motor is at least 87% tungsten.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein said bite plate is made of a single thermoplastic material.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein said bite plate has a pair of cutouts on a lingual side thereof at a position near canine teeth of a patient, such that molar ends of said bite plate can be flexed at least 1 cm closer together or 1 cm farther apart.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein said bite plate is 2 mm or less in thickness at occlusal surfaces thereof.

6. The device of claim 4 , wherein said bite plate is 1.5 mm or less in thickness at occlusal surfaces thereof.

7. The device of claim 3 , wherein said single thermoplastic material forms said bite plate and completely covers said extraoral vibratory source.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein an access hatch is provided in said single thermoplastic material such that said extraoral vibratory source can be accessed.

9. The device of claim 7 , which is waterproof.

10. The device of claim 7 , which is water resistant.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein said device vibrates at a single frequency between 20-40 Hz and at a single force between 0.1-0.5 Newtons.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein said device vibrates at 30 Hz and 0.2 Newtons.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein said device vibrates at a single frequency between 20-40 Hz with a variance of ±2 Hz and a single force between 0.1-0.5 N with a variance of ±0.05 N.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein said device vibrates at 30 Hz with a variance of ±2 Hz and at 0.2 N with a variance of ±0.05 N.

15. A faster method of orthodontic remodeling, comprising: a) a patient wearing braces or aligners using the device of claim 13 and biting said bite plate, and b) activating said device for about 20 minutes daily, wherein said method provides 50% faster tooth movement as compared to without using said device.

16. A faster method of orthodontic remodeling, comprising: a) a patient wearing braces or aligners using the device of claim 14 and biting said bite plate, and b) activating said device for about 20 minutes daily, wherein said method provides 50% faster tooth movement as compared to without using said device.

17. An orthodontic remodeling device, comprising:

a) an extraoral vibratory source comprising:

i) an actuator comprising an offset weight motor;

ii) a processor that controls said actuator;

iii) a power source that drives said actuator;

b) an intraoral attachment consisting essentially of a bite plate allowing for contact with occlusal surfaces and allowing contact with upper and lower buccal surfaces of a patient's teeth, wherein said patient biting on said bite plate holds said orthodontic remodeling device in place during use;

c) said vibratory source being coupled to the intraoral attachment;

d) wherein said orthodontic remodeling device vibrates at a single frequency selected to be between 0.1 Hz and 400 Hz;

e) wherein a speed of said offset weight motor is controlled with a capacitive sensor comprising one or more header pins having a weak electrostatic (ES) field that is disrupted when said offset weight passes by, said header pins operably coupled to a solid state ES field sensor operably is coupled to said processor, wherein said processor detects said speed by detecting said disrupted ES field, and controls said speed such that said speed varies by less than 2 Hz; and

f) wherein when used together with braces or aligners for 20 minutes daily said device accelerates tooth movement as compared to a patient not using said device.
