Abstract

The system and method alters the data delivery service plan of a subscriber in response to a network degradation event that negatively affects the subscriber's plan during transportation (e.g. in flight). In response to the subscriber's request, the system and method grants the subscriber access to the in-flight network and/or data during the flight. Additionally, the system and method monitors and detects network degradation events during the flight. If an event occurs that negatively affects the subscribers plan during the flight, the system and method determines a time extension for the subscriber to access the network and/or data based on the duration of the network degradation event. The system and method also modifies the subscriber's plan based on the determined time extension and notifies the subscriber about the network degradation event and plan modification. The plan modification may credit the subscriber additional time, data, and/or services.

(iii) one or more processors executing the instructions so that the system:

detects an occurrence of a network degradation event, wherein the network degradation event occurs during a flight of the aircraft when at least a portion of the one or more communication networks has a response speed that exceeds a degradation threshold;

determines whether or not the occurrence of the network degradation event is intentional based on a flight stage of the in-flight aircraft;

when the occurrence of the network degradation event is determined to be intentional based on the flight stage of the in-flight aircraft, maintains an in-flight data delivery service plan associated with a subscriber device onboard the in-flight aircraft for accessing data via the one or more communication networks during the flight; and

when the occurrence of the network degradation event is determined to be not intentional based on the flight stage of the in-flight aircraft, (i) determines, in response to the detection of the occurrence of the network degradation event, a modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device for accessing data via the one or more communication networks during the flight; and (ii) modifies the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device to include the modification.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable memories are further executable to cause the system to cause the subscriber device to be notified of the occurrence of the network degradation event.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable memories are further executable to cause the system to cause a subscriber associated with the subscriber device to be notified of the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the notification of the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan comprises at least one of an email, a text message, a digital message, an update to an account of the subscriber, a letter, a voicemail, or a phone call.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein (i) the one or more computing devices, (ii) the one or more non-transitory computer-readable memories, and (iii) the one or more processors are disposed in the aircraft.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein (i) the one or more computing devices, (ii) the one or more non-transitory computer-readable memories, and (iii) the one or more processors are disposed in the ground network.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the occurrence of the network degradation event is determined to be not intentional based on the flight stage of the in-flight aircraft, and wherein the instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable memories are further executable to cause the system to:

receive a data request from the subscriber device during the occurrence of the network degradation event; and

provide, to the subscriber device, an indication of the network degradation event and an indication of the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection of the occurrence of the network degradation event comprises a reception of information indicative of the network degradation event.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable memories are further executable cause the system to send, to the ground network, information descriptive of the occurrence of the network degradation event.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device comprises a monetary credit for a future in-flight data delivery service plan purchase or an extension of time to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device is based on a selection of a subscriber.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more communication networks include a satellite communication link, the satellite communication link utilizing a satellite frequency band allocated for delivering data to and from in-flight aircraft.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more communication networks include an air-to-ground (ATG) communication link, the ATG communication link utilizing an ATG frequency band allocated for delivering data to and from in-flight aircraft via antennas disposed on the bellies of the in-flight aircraft.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more communication networks include an on-board wireless network.

15. A method for providing a dynamic, time-based data delivery service to vehicle passenger subscribers during travel, comprising:

detecting, by one or more computing devices, an occurrence of a network degradation event, wherein the network degradation event occurs while a vehicle is in transit and one or more communication networks have a response speed that exceeds a degradation threshold, the vehicle being an in-flight aircraft, and the one or more communication networks communicatively coupling one or more subscriber devices onboard the vehicle with a ground network;

upon detecting the occurrence of network degradation event, determining, by the one or more computing devices, whether or not the occurrence of the network degradation event is intentional based on a flight stage of vehicle;

when the occurrence of the network degradation event is determined to be intentional based on the flight stage of the vehicle, maintaining, by the one or more computing devices, an in-flight data delivery service plan associated with a subscriber device onboard the vehicle for sending and/or receiving data via the one or more communication networks while the vehicle is in transit; and

when the occurrence of the network degradation to event is determined to be not intentional based on the flight stage of the vehicle, (i) determining, by the one or more computing devices, a modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device for sending and/or receiving data via the one or more communication networks while the vehicle is in transit; and (ii) applying, by the one or more computing devices, the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device comprises a credit to an account of a subscriber associated with the subscriber device or an extension of time to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device; and

determining the modification to the in-flight data delivery service plan associated with the subscriber device comprises determining an amount of the credit or the extension of time based on a duration of the network degradation event.
