Abstract

The present disclosure provides a multiple use threaded fastener having a plurality of redundant locking features. The fastener includes a threaded hollow lock bolt having a tapered internal wall constructed to threadingly engage a threaded aperture in a housing. A threaded lock stud having a tapered external wall is constructed to fit at least partially within the hollow lock bolt and threadingly engage the threaded aperture of the housing and engage the tapered wall of the hollow lock bolt.

Claims (29)

1. A locking fastener comprising:

a hollow lock bolt having a drive head formed proximate a first end and external threads formed proximate a second end thereof, the hollow lock bolt further having a relatively smooth internal wall with an angled taper extending along at least a portion thereof, and

a lock stud constructed to engage the hollow lock bolt, the lock stud having a drive head proximate a first end and external threads formed proximate a second end thereof, the lock stud further having a relatively smooth external wall with an angled taper formed along a portion thereof, an angle of the angled taper of the hollow lock bolt and an angle of the angled taper of the lock stud being different from one another,

wherein the locking fastener is configured for clamping a first component between at least a portion of the hollow lock bolt and a second component and the lock stud and the hollow lock bolt are configured so that the drive head of the lock stud extends past an interface between the first component and the second component in an installed condition of the locking fastener, and

wherein the lock stud includes a solid portion and a circumference of the relatively smooth external wall of the lock stud engages a circumference of the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt to cause the solid portion to block fluid communication through the hollow lock bolt in the installed condition of the locking fastener.

2. The locking fastener of claim 1 , wherein a difference between the angle of the angled taper of the hollow lock bolt and the angle of the angled taper of the lock stud is not greater than about 10 degrees.

The locking fastener of claim 1 , wherein the external threads formed proximate the second end of the hollow lock bolt are sized to form a mating pair with internal threads formed in the second component and the external threads formed proximate the second end of the lock stud are sized to form a mating pair with the internal threads formed in the second component.

4. A locking fastener comprising:

a hollow lock bolt having a drive head disposed proximate a first end and external threads formed proximate a second end thereof, the hollow lock bolt further having an internal wall with a taper between about 1 degree and about 20 degrees extending along at least a portion thereof; and

a lock stud having a drive head disposed proximate a first end and external threads disposed proximate a second end thereof, the lock stud further having an external wall with a taper between about 1 degree and about 20 degrees extending along a portion thereof, wherein the drive head of the lock stud is configured to enter completely into the hollow lock bolt,

wherein the locking fastener is configured for clamping a first component between at least a portion of the hollow lock bolt and a second component when the threads of the hollow lock bolt and the threads of the lock stud engage corresponding mating threads in the second component,

wherein the lock stud further includes a solid shank extending between the first and second ends of the lock stud, the solid shank includes the relatively smooth external wall with the taper, and the relatively smooth external wall of the solid shank is configured to engage the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt to cause the solid shank to block fluid communication through the hollow lock bolt.

5. The locking fastener of claim 4 , wherein the taper of the internal wall of the hollow lock bolt is between about 2 degrees and about 6 degrees.

6. The locking fastener of claim 5 , wherein the taper of the external wall of the lock stud is between about 2 degrees and about 6 degrees.

7. The locking fastener of claim 5 , wherein the taper of the external wall of the lock stud is substantially 4 degrees.

8. The locking fastener of claim 4 , wherein the taper of the external wall of the lock stud is between about 2 degrees and about 6 degrees.

9. The locking fastener of claim 8 , wherein the taper of the internal wall of the hollow lock is substantially 4 degrees.

10. The locking fastener of claim 4 , wherein the taper of the external wall of the lock stud is substantially 4 degrees.

11. The locking fastener of claim 4 , wherein the taper of the internal wall of the hollow lock is substantially 4 degrees.

12. The locking fastener of claim 4 , wherein a difference between the taper of the hollow lock bolt and the taper of the lock stud is not greater than about 10 degrees.

13. A locking fastener comprising:

a hollow lock bolt having a drive head formed proximate a first end and external threads formed proximate a second end thereof, the hollow lock bolt further having a relatively smooth internal wall with an angled taper extending along at least a tapered portion of the relatively smooth internal wall, and

a lock stud configured to be received by the hollow lock bolt, the lock stud having a drive head proximate a first end thereof, external threads formed proximate a second end thereof, and a solid shank extending between the first and second ends, the shank having a relatively smooth external wall with an angled taper formed along a tapered portion of the relatively smooth external wall, and the relatively smooth external wall of the solid shank is configured to engage the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt to cause the solid shank to block fluid communication through the hollow lock bolt,

wherein the tapered portion of the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt has an angled taper between about 2 degrees and about 6 degrees.

The locking fastener of claim 13 , wherein the locking fastener is configured for clamping a first component between at least a portion of the hollow lock bolt and a second component, the external threads formed proximate the second end of the hollow lock bolt are sized to form a mating pair with internal threads formed in the second component, and the external threads formed proximate the second end of the lock stud are sized to form a mating pair with the internal threads formed in the second component.

15. The locking fastener of claim 13 , wherein a length of the tapered portion of the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt and a length of the tapered portion of the relatively smooth external wall of the shank are generally the same.

16. The locking fastener of claim 13 , wherein the tapered portion of the relatively smooth external wall of the lock stud has an angled taper between about 2 degrees and about 6 degrees.

17. The locking fastener of claim 13 , wherein the taper angle of the tapered portion of the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt and the taper angle of the tapered portion of the relatively smooth external wall of the lock stud are different from one another.

The locking fastener of claim 17 , wherein a difference between the taper angle of the tapered portion of the relatively smooth internal wall of the hollow lock bolt and the taper angle of the tapered portion of the relatively smooth external wall of the lock stud is no greater than about 10 degrees.
