Abstract

Methods and apparatus provide for network communication to be maintained during transfer of email data between two devices. In one aspect a method includes receiving a request via a network connection with a mobile device for email data, determining a network timeout value of the request from the mobile device, producing the email data in response to receiving the request, in parallel with the production of the email data and while the processing of the email data is incomplete, determining an interval less than the network timeout value of the request, and sending a portion of a response to the request over the network connection to the mobile device at the interval, completing the response to the mobile device over the network connection in response to completion of the production of the email data.

Claims (67)

1. A method of maintaining a network connection with a mobile device while processing data, comprising:

receiving a request via the network connection with the mobile device for email data;

determining a network timeout value of the request from the mobile device;

initiating processing via the electronic hardware processing circuit, to produce the email data in response to receiving the request;

in parallel with the processing to produce the email data and while the processing of the email data is incomplete:

determining an interval less than the network timeout value of the request, and

sending a portion of a response to the request over the network connection to the mobile device at the interval;

completing the response to the mobile device over the network connection in response to completion of the production of the email data.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an operating system of the mobile device; and

determining the network timeout value of the request based on the operating system.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

limiting the size of the portion of the response to include four or less bytes of data; and

generating the portion of the response to not include data derived from the email data.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending a network request for an email data set to a server in response to receiving the request from the mobile device; and

receiving the email data set from the server after the timer has expired.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

receiving, from the mobile device, one or more properties of the mobile device;

filtering the received email data set based on the properties of the mobile device; and

completing the response to the mobile device based on the filtered email data set.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising filtering the received data set based on at least one of the mobile device model number, mobile device EUN, or mobile device operating system.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising filtering the received data set based on whether the mobile device is communicating over a secure channel.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising iteratively determining a additional predetermined time period has elapsed, and sending of a portion of the response, until processing of the data set is complete.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising generating the portions of the response to not include email message data or attachments from the data set.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that a received email message is not authorized to be transferred to the mobile device;

sending a block notification message to the mobile device in response to the determining;

receiving an indication that the received email message is authorized to be transferred to the mobile device after sending the response to the mobile device;

in response to the indication, sending a first network message to the mobile device, the first network message indicating a property of the block notification message has changed from a first value to a second value;

receiving a second request from the mobile device for an email data set after sending the first network message; and

in response to the second request, sending a response to the mobile device including the received email message instead of the block notification message.

11. An apparatus for maintaining a network connection with a mobile device while processing data, comprising:

one or more electronic hardware processors;

an electronic hardware memory, operably connected to the one or more electronic hardware processors, and storing instructions that configure the processor to perform a method of maintaining a network connection with a mobile device while processing data, the method comprising:

receiving a request via the network connection from the mobile device for email data;

determining a network timeout value of the request from the mobile device;

initiating processing to produce the email data in response to receiving the request;

in parallel with the processing to produce the email data and while the processing of the email data is incomplete:

determining an interval less than the network timeout value of the request, and

sending a portion of a response to the request over the network connection at the interval to the mobile device in response to the determination;

completing the response to the mobile device over the network connection in response to a completion of the production of the email data.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising:

determining an operating system of the mobile device; and

determining the network timeout value of the request based on the operating system.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising:

limiting the size of the portion of the response to include four or less bytes of data; and

generating the portion of the response to not include data derived from the email data.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising:

sending a network request for an email data set to a server in response to receiving the request from the mobile device; and

receiving the email data set from the server after the timer has expired.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising:

receiving, from the mobile device, one or more properties of the mobile device;

filtering the received email data set based on the properties of the mobile device; and

completing the response to the mobile device based on the filtered email data set.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising filtering the received email data based on at least one of the mobile device model number, mobile device EUN, or mobile device operating system.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising filtering the received email data based on whether the mobile device is communicating over a secure channel.

18. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising iteratively determining an additional predetermined period of time has elapsed, and sending of a portion of the response in response to the determination until processing of the data set is complete.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that configure the one or more processors to perform additional steps comprising generating the portion of the response to not include email message data or attachments from the data set.

20. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that when executed cause a processor to perform a method of maintaining a network connection with a mobile device while processing data, the method comprising:

receiving a request via the network connection from the mobile device for email data;

determining a network timeout value of the request from the mobile device;

initiating processing to produce the email data in response to receiving the request;

in parallel with the processing to produce the email data and while the processing of the email data is incomplete:

determining an interval less than the network timeout value of the request, and

sending a portion of a response to the mobile device at the interval in response to the determination; and

completing the response to the mobile device over the network connection in response to a completion of the production of the email data.
