Abstract

The catheter device comprises a motor at the proximal end of the catheter device and a drive shaft, extending from the proximal end section to the distal end section of the catheter device, for driving a rotating element located at the distal end of the catheter device. The catheter device also comprises a hose-like catheter body which encompasses the drive shaft and extends from the proximal end section to the distal end section. At the proximal end of the catheter device, the drive shaft is connected to a motor by a clutch. The clutch is a magnetic clutch with a proximal and a distal magnet unit. The proximal magnet unit is connected to the motor and the distal magnet unit to the drive shaft. The distal magnet unit is mounted fluid-tight in a clutch housing. The proximal end of the catheter body makes a fluid-tight connection with the clutch housing.

Claims (67)

1. A catheter device comprising:

a drive shaft;

a rotor connected to the drive shaft, wherein the drive shaft extends through the rotor beyond a distal end of the rotor;

a drive shaft bearing coupled to the drive shaft distal of the distal end of the rotor;

an expandable pump head; and

a covering;

wherein:

the expandable pump head comprises an expandable and compressible pump housing with a continuous tubular mesh structure having apertures;

the pump housing comprises a plurality of sections of the continuous tubular mesh structure arranged between a distal end of the housing and a proximal end of the housing, the plurality of sections including an intake section and a pump section;

the pump section includes the rotor;

a transition section is formed in the mesh structure between the pump section and the intake section;

at least some of the apertures of the mesh structure in the transition section are larger than the apertures of the mesh structure in the pump section;

the covering covers at least some of the apertures in the pump section when the expandable pump head is in an expanded state; and

the drive shaft bearing coupled to the drive shaft radially centers the rotor within the pump section.

2. The catheter device of claim 1 , wherein the apertures in the intake section are larger than the apertures in the transition section.

3. The catheter device of claim 2 , wherein:

the plurality of sections includes an outlet section located between the pump section and a proximal end of the housing; and

the apertures in the outlet section are larger than the apertures in the pump section.

4. The catheter device of claim 3 , wherein:

the plurality of sections, from the distal end to the proximal end, comprises:

a distal connection section;

the intake section;

the pump section;

the outlet section; and

a proximal connection section.

5. The catheter device of claim 4 , wherein:

the apertures in the pump section are smaller than the apertures in the distal and proximal connection sections.

6. The catheter device of claim 5 , wherein:

the apertures in the distal and proximal connection sections are smaller than the apertures in the intake section and the outlet section.

7. The catheter device of claim 3 , wherein:

the intake section widens conically towards the proximal end of the housing; and

the outlet section narrows conically towards the proximal end of the housing.

8. The catheter device of claim 1 , wherein:

the rotor is expandable and compressible;

in a compressed state the rotor has a diameter of approximately the inside diameter of the pump housing; and

in an expanded state the rotor is spaced away from the inside diameter of the pump housing by a distance of roughly between 0.01 mm and 0.5 mm.

9. The catheter device of claim 8 , comprising a tubular cover hose that encompasses the expandable pump head in the compressed state.

10. The catheter device of claim 8 , wherein the pump housing and rotor unfold radially outwards after the cover hose is withdrawn.

11. The catheter device of claim 1 , wherein the apertures are polygon-shaped.

12. The catheter device of claim 11 , wherein the apertures are rhombus-shaped.

13. The catheter device of claim 1 , wherein the covering is an elastic covering.

14. The catheter device of claim 13 , wherein the elastic covering is one of a polyurethane covering, a polyethylene covering, a polypropylene covering, a silicone covering and a parylene covering.

15. The catheter device of claim 1 , wherein struts of the mesh structure in the transition section are wider than struts of the mesh structure in the pump section.

16. The catheter device of claim 1 , wherein the covering covers the apertures in the transition section but does not cover apertures in the intake section.

17. A catheter device comprising:

an expandable pump head comprising an expandable and compressible pump housing having a proximal end and a distal end, the pump housing comprising a continuous tubular mesh structure having a plurality of apertures, and a covering;

a rotor; and

a drive shaft extending through the rotor, from a proximal end to beyond a distal end of the rotor, the drive shaft connected at the distal end of the rotor to a drive shaft bearing;

wherein:

the expandable pump housing comprises an intake section and a pump section arranged between a proximal end and a distal end of the pump housing;

the intake section widens conically towards the proximal end;

the rotor is mounted in the pump section;

the apertures in the pump section are smaller than the apertures in the intake section;

the covering closes at least some of the apertures in the pump section when the expandable pump head is in an expanded state; and

the drive shaft bearing radially centers the rotor within the pump section.

18. The catheter device of claim 17 , wherein the covering is an elastic covering.

19. The catheter device of claim 18 , wherein the pump housing comprises:
