Passive preload and capstan drive for surgical instruments
A system comprises a medical instrument including a rotatable capstan. The rotatable capstan includes a first coupling feature and a drive system including a rotatable drive element. The rotatable drive element includes a second coupling feature. The first and second coupling features have an aligned engagement configuration in which rotation of the rotatable drive element induces rotation of the rotatable capstan and a non-aligned engagement configuration in which rotation of the rotatable drive element does not induce rotation of the rotatable capstan.
1. A system, comprising:
a medical instrument including a rotatable capstan, the rotatable capstan including a first coupling feature; and
a drive system including a rotatable drive element, the rotatable drive element including a second coupling feature that couples to the first coupling feature, wherein
the first and second coupling features have an aligned engagement configuration in which rotation of the rotatable drive element induces rotation of the rotatable capstan and a non-aligned engagement configuration in which rotation of the rotatable drive element does not induce rotation of the rotatable capstan.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first or second coupling features includes a shaft and the other of the first or second coupling features includes a bore and wherein the shaft is rotatable within the bore in the non-aligned engagement configuration and is not rotatable within the bore in the aligned engagement configuration.
3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the bore has a circular cross-section.
4. The system of claim 2 , wherein either the first or second Coupling Feature Includes a Compressible Projection and the Other of the First or Second Coupling features includes a slot and wherein the compressible projection is engaged with the slot in the aligned engagement configuration and is not engaged with the slot in the non-aligned engagement configuration.
5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the compressible projection is spring-loaded.
6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the compressible projection is compressed in the non-aligned engagement configuration and uncompressed in the aligned engagement configuration.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive system includes a motor coupled to the rotatable drive element.
8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the medical instrument includes a tendon wrapped around the rotatable capstan.
9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the medical instrument includes a flexible shaft through which the tendon extends.
10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the medical instrument includes an end effector and wherein rotation of the rotatable drive element induces actuation of the end effector in the aligned engagement configuration and does not induce actuation of the end effector in the non-aligned engagement configuration.
11. The system of claim 1 , wherein in the non-aligned engagement configuration, the second coupling feature is rotatable relative to the first coupling feature.
12. A medical system, comprising:
a medical instrument including a rotatable capstan, the capstan including a bore and a first alignment feature; and
a drive motor including a drive shaft sized for receipt within the bore, the drive shaft including a second alignment feature for alignment with the first alignment feature, wherein
the drive shaft is rotatable within the bore without rotating the capstan until the first and second alignment features are engaged.
13. The medical system of claim 12 , wherein the bore has a circular cross-section.
14. The system of claim 12 , wherein either the first or second alignment features includes a compressible projection and the other of the first or second alignment features includes a slot and wherein the compressible projection extends with the slot when the first and second alignment features are engaged.
15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the compressible projection includes a lever.
16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the compressible projection is spring-loaded.
17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the compressible projection is compressed when the shaft is rotatable within the bore and uncompressed when the first and second alignment features are engaged.
18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the medical instrument includes a tendon wrapped around the rotatable capstan.
19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the medical instrument includes a flexible shaft through which the tendon extends.
20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the medical instrument includes an end effector and wherein a force applied to the tendon by the rotating capstan actuates the end effector when the first and second alignment features are engaged.
