Abstract

A continuous glucose monitor for wirelessly transmitting data relating to glucose value to a plurality of displays is disclosed, as well as systems and methods for limiting the number of display devices that can connect to a continuous glucose transmitter. In addition, security, including hashing techniques and a changing application key, can be used to provide secure communications between the continuous glucose transmitter and the displays. Also provided is a continuous glucose monitor and techniques for authenticating multiple displays, providing secure data transmissions to multiple displays, and coordinating the interaction of commands and data updates between multiple displays.

Claims (18)

1. A method for connecting a transmitter of a continuous glucose monitoring system with a plurality of display devices, comprising: generating analyte values by a continuous analyte sensor coupled to the transmitter of the continuous glucose monitoring system, wherein the glucose monitoring system is a transdermal system; advertising, by the transmitter, at a defined communication interval to indicate presence of the transmitter to one or more display devices; receiving, in response to the advertising, requests from a first display device and a second display device to connect with the transmitter; determining to authorize connections with the first display device and the second display device, wherein the determination includes verifying identification of the first display device and the second display device authenticating to pair the first display device and the second display device when the connections are authorized, wherein the authentication includes exchanging one or more keys; storing bonding information associated with the authentication process in memory; periodically establishing one or more data communication channels during one or more time intervals to allow transmission of the analyte values from the transmitter of the continuous glucose monitoring system; and changing the one or more keys at least during one of the time intervals.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: inserting a hashed value associated with a transmitter identifier into advertisement signals; comparing the hashed value in the advertising signals with a hashed value of a transmitter identifier from at least one of the first display device or the second display device; and authorizing the connection when the hashed value in the advertising signal matches the hashed value of the transmitter identifier from at least one of the first display device or the second display device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter periodically advertises at a plurality of defined communication intervals.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the periodic establishment of the data communication channels occur at approximately five minute intervals.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first list being a hardware-level list stores the types of allowed devices, and a second list being a software-level list stores the bonding information.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising limiting a number of display devices connected to the transmitter with a given device type to one in the communication interval.

7. A continuous glucose monitoring system for connecting a transmitter with a plurality of display devices, the system comprising: a continuous analyte sensor coupled to the transmitter and configured to generate analyte values, wherein the glucose monitoring system is a transdermal system; and the transmitter configured to: advertise at a defined communication interval to indicate presence of the transmitter to one or more display devices; receive, in response to the advertising, requests from a first display device and a second display device to connect with the transmitter; determine to authorize connections with the first display device and the second display device, wherein the determination includes verifying identification of the first and the second display devices; authenticate to pair the first display device and the second display device with the transmitter when the connections are authorized, wherein the authentication includes exchanging one or more keys; store bonding information associated with the authentication process in memory; periodically establish one or more data communication channels during one or more time intervals to allow transmission of the analyte values, and wherein the one or more keys are changed at least during one of the time intervals.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to: insert a hashed value associated with a transmitter identifier into advertisement signals; compare the hashed value in the advertising signals with a hashed value of a transmitter identifier from at least one of the first display device or the second display device; and authorize the connection when the hashed value in the advertising signal matches the hashed value of the transmitter identifier from at least one of the first display device or the second display device.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the transmitter periodically advertises at a plurality of defined communication intervals.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the periodic establishment of the data communication channels occur at approximately five minute intervals.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein a first list being a hardware-level list stores the types of allowed devices, and a second list being a software-level list stores the bonding information.

12. The system of claim 7 , further comprising limiting a number of display devices connected to the transmitter with a given device type to one in the communication interval.

13. A computer-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by a processor, perform a method for connecting a transmitter of a continuous glucose monitoring system with a plurality of display devices, comprising: generating analyte values by a continuous analyte sensor coupled to the transmitter of the continuous glucose monitoring system, wherein the glucose monitoring system is a transdermal system; advertising, by the transmitter, at a defined communication interval to indicate presence of the transmitter to one or more display devices; receiving, in response to the advertising, requests from a first display device and a second display device to connect with the transmitter; determining to authorize connections with the first display device and the second display device, wherein the determination includes verifying identification of the first and the second display devices; authenticating to pair the first display device and the second display device when the connections are authorized, wherein the authentication includes exchanging one or more keys; storing bonding information associated with the authentication process in memory; and periodically establishing one or more data communication channels during one or more time intervals to allow transmission of the analyte values from the transmitter of the continuous glucose monitoring system, and changing the one or more keys at least during one of the time intervals.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the method further comprises: inserting a hashed value associated with a transmitter identifier into advertisement signals; comparing the hashed value in the advertising signals with a hashed value of a transmitter identifier from at least one of the first display device or the second display device; and authorizing the connection when the hashed value in the advertising signal matches the hashed value of the transmitter identifier from at least one of the first display device or the second display device.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the transmitter periodically advertises at a plurality of defined communication intervals.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the periodic establishment of the data communication channels occur at approximately five minute intervals.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein a first list being a hardware-level list stores the types of allowed devices, and a second list being a software-level list stores the bonding information.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising limiting a number of display devices connected to the transmitter with a given device type to one in the communication interval.
