Abstract

A method implemented in a device is disclosed for networking through signals transmitted across a shared medium network. The method starts with monitoring for a first signal on a shared medium of the shared medium network. The first signal is processed after it is received and while the first signal is being processed, a set of one or more signals is received on the shared medium. Then a set of one or more amplitude increases is determined, where each amplitude increase is from an earlier received signal to a later received signal. The set of one or more amplitude increases is compared to a threshold value and at least partially in response to the comparison, the device discards one or more signals from the first signal and the set of one or more signals.

Claims (47)

1. A method comprising:

monitoring for a first signal;

processing the first signal received;

receiving a set of one or more signals while processing the first signal;

determining a set of one or more amplitude increases, wherein each amplitude increase is from an earlier received signal to a later received signal, and wherein each of the earlier received and the later received signals is one of the first and the set of one or more signals;

comparing the set of one or more amplitude increases to a threshold value; and

at least partially in response to the comparison, discarding one or more signals from the first signal and the set of one or more signals.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is received over one of a power line, a radio frequency channel, an optical fiber, a copper line, fluid, gas, and solid molecule vibration or motion.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein an amplitude of each of the first signal and the set of signals are over a sensitivity setting.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold value is configurable.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold value is a value between 6 dB and 20 dB.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the discarding one or more signals from the first signal and the set of one or more signals is further in response to a second comparison of validity statuses of error-detecting codes associated with messages carried by the first signal and the set of one or more signals.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the discarding one or more signals from the set of one or more signals is in response a determination that the one or more signals received is not destined to the device.

8. A method comprising:

monitoring for a first signal on a shared medium;

processing the first signal received on the shared medium;

processing a set of one or more signals as the set of one or more signals is received from the shared medium while processing the first signal;

comparing validity statuses of error-detecting codes associated with messages carried by the first signal and the set of one or more signals; and

at least partially in response to the comparison, discarding one or more signals from the first signal and the set of one or more signals.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein an amplitude of each of the first signal and the set of signals are over a sensitivity setting.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the discarding one or more signals from the first signal and the set of one or more signals is further in response to a comparison of a set of one or more amplitude increases to a threshold value, wherein each amplitude increase of the set of one or more amplitude increases is from a signal to a later received second signal, and wherein each signal is one of the first and the set of one or more signals.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the discarding one or more signals from the set of one or more signals is further in response a determination that the one or more signals received is not destined to the device.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the shared medium is one of a power line, a radio frequency channel, an optical fiber, a copper line, fluid, gas, and solid molecule vibration or motion.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the error-detecting codes are one of a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code and checksum code.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the error-detecting codes are a CRC code, wherein the CRC code is one of CRC-16, CRC-18, and CRC-32.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a processor, and

memory to store instructions, which when executed by the processor provide:

a monitor to monitor for signals on a medium,

a message processor to process messages carried by signals received from the medium through the monitor; and

a signal amplitude checker to determine a set of one or more amplitude increases, each amplitude increase is from an earlier received signal to a later received signal, wherein each of the earlier received signal and the later received signal is one of the received signal, the signal amplitude checker to compare the set of one or more amplitude increases to a threshold value, and wherein the message processor is further to discard the processing of one or more signals at least partially in response to the comparison; and

a setting database configured to store the threshold value.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the medium is one of a power line, a radio frequency channel, an optical fiber, a copper line, fluid, gas, and solid molecule vibration or motion.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein amplitudes of the signals are over a sensitivity setting, and wherein the sensitivity setting is stored in the setting database.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising: instructions stored in the memory to provide error-detecting code verification logic configured to compare validity statuses of error-detecting codes associated with messages carried by the signals received, wherein the message processor is to discard the processing of the one or more signals further in response to the comparison of validity statuses of error-detecting codes associated with messages carried by the signals received.

19. An apparatus comprising:

a processor, and

memory to store instructions, which when executed by the processor provide:

a monitor to monitor for signals on a shared medium;

a message processor to process messages carried by signals received from the shared medium through the monitor,

an error-detecting code verification logic to compare validity statuses of error-detecting codes associated with the messages carried by the signals received from the shared medium through the monitor, and

the message processor further to discard the processing of one or more signals at least partially based on the comparison by the error-detecting code verification logic.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the shared medium is one of a power line, a radio frequency channel, an optical fiber, a copper line, fluid, gas, and solid molecule vibration or motion.
