Abstract

The present invention relates to devices and methods for the treatment of diseases in the vasculature, and more specifically, devices and methods for treatment of aneurysms found in blood vessels. In one embodiment, a system for treating an aneurysm is disclosed. The system comprises a catheter delivery system, an expandable foam configured to pass through the catheter delivery system, and a stent having a first end and a second end. The stent is configured to extend across the aneurysm. The expandable foam is configured to expand in the aneurysm when exposed to a fluid.

Claims (39)

1. A system for treating an aneurysm comprising:

a catheter delivery system; and

an expandable filler and an outer skin,

wherein the expandable filler is passable through the catheter delivery system,

wherein the outer skin is expandable,

wherein when the expandable filler is in a first deployed configuration, the expandable filler has a first length,

wherein when the expandable filler is in a second deployed configuration, the expandable filler has a second length,

wherein the second length is greater than the first length, and

wherein the second length has more folds than the first length.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable filler expands to an expanded configuration when exposed to a fluid.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a communication port coupled to the catheter delivery system, wherein the expandable filler is passable through the communication port to the catheter delivery system.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a guidewire, wherein the catheter delivery system is trackable over the guidewire to the aneurysm.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outer skin is compliant.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein when the expandable filler is in an expanded configuration, the expandable filler is fully confined within the aneurysm.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable filler comprises an expandable foam, and wherein the expandable foam comprises a sponge.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein when the expandable filler is in an expanded configuration, the outer skin is in conformal contact with a wall of the aneurysm.

9. A system for treating an aneurysm comprising:

a catheter delivery system; and

an expandable filler and an outer skin,

wherein the expandable filler comprises a compressed configuration when passing through the catheter delivery system,

wherein the expandable filler expands into an expanded configuration when delivered in the aneurysm,

wherein the outer skin has a first deployed configuration and a second deployed configuration, and wherein the outer skin is closer to a wall of the aneurysm when the outer skin is in the second deployed configuration than when the outer skin is in the first deployed configuration,

wherein when the outer skin is in the second deployed configuration, the expandable filler is a continuous foam structure that is foldable between the outer skin and a stent.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein when the expandable filler is in a deployed configuration, the expandable filler is fully confined within the aneurysm.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable filler comprises an expandable foam, and wherein the expandable foam comprises a sponge.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable filler expands from the compressed configuration to the expanded configuration when exposed to a fluid.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the fluid comprises blood.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein when the expandable filler is in a deployed configuration, the outer skin is in conformal contact with the wall of the aneurysm.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable filler comprises a polymer.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable filler comprises collagen.

17. A system for treating an aneurysm comprising:

a catheter delivery system having a tip and a communication port; and

an expandable filler and an outer skin, wherein when in a deployed configuration, the expandable filler is delivered through the tip of the catheter delivery system and expands into an expanded configuration inside the aneurysm, and wherein when in the deployed configuration, a portion of the outer skin contacts the expandable filler and a wall of the aneurysm,

wherein the communication port terminates at an entrance of an expandable space,

wherein the expandable filler is passable through the communication port from the catheter delivery system to the expandable space, and

wherein the communication port is in communication with a lumen of a stent.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the expandable filler expands into the expanded configuration when exposed to a fluid.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the tip of the catheter delivery system comprises a prevention structure configured to prevent the tip from backing out of the aneurysm.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the catheter delivery system contains the expandable filler before delivering the expandable filler into the aneurysm.
