Abstract

Techniques and systems are provided for identifying a video segment displayed on a screen of a remote television system, and providing an option to switch to an alternative or related version of the video program that includes the video segment. For example, video segments displayed on a screen of a television system can be identified, and contextually-targeted content or contextually-related alternative content can be provided to a television system based on the identification of a video segment. The alternative or related version of the video program can include the currently displayed program in an on-demand format that can be viewed off-line and can be started over from a beginning portion of the program.

Claims (37)

1. A matching server for identifying video content being displayed by a media system, the matching server comprising:

one or more processors; and

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed on the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

transmit, to the media system, one or more software applications configured for execution by the media system;

receive pixel data associated with a video frame of a video segment being displayed by the media system, wherein the video segment includes at least a portion of a version of a video program;

identify the video segment being displayed by the media system, wherein identifying the video segment includes comparing the pixel data with stored pixel data to find a closest match;

determine contextual content, wherein the contextual content is contextually related to the identified video segment, wherein the contextual content includes an option to switch to an alternative version of the video program, wherein the version and the alternative version are of a same video program, and wherein the alternative version is from a video server; and

transmit one or more software instructions, wherein the one or more software instructions, when received by the media system, cause a software application associated with the contextual content to execute on the media system, wherein the software application provides the contextual content to the media system, wherein selection of the option causes the media system to switch from the version of the video program to the alternative version of the same video program.

2. The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the alternative version is a version of the video program starting from a beginning of the video program.

3. The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the contextual content is displayed by the media system while the video program is being displayed by the media system.

4. The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the contextual content includes a graphical interface with the option.

5. The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the video server includes a video-on-demand server.

The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the contextual content further includes an option to select from a plurality of alternative versions of the video program, and wherein the plurality of alternative versions include video control capability, display format of the video content, or reduced commercial messaging.

7. The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the media system requests the alternative version from the video server when the option is selected.

8. The matching server of claim 1 , wherein the media system is connected with a third party content server when the option is selected, wherein the media system connects with the third party content server to obtain third party content from the third party content server at a specified time interval of the alternative version.

9. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

transmitting one or more software applications configured for execution by a media system;

receiving, by a computing device, pixel data associated with a video frame of a video segment being displayed by the media system, wherein the video segment includes at least a portion of a version of a video program;

identifying the video segment being displayed by the media system, wherein identifying the video segment includes comparing the pixel data with stored pixel data to find a closest match;

determining contextual content, wherein the contextual content is contextually related to the identified video segment, wherein the contextual content includes an option to switch to an alternative version of the video program, wherein the version and the alternative version are of a same video program, and wherein the alternative version is from a video server; and

transmitting one or more software instructions, wherein the one or more software instructions, when received by the media system, cause a software application associated with the contextual content to execute on the media system, wherein the software application provides the contextual content to the media system, wherein selection of the option causes the media system to switch from the version of the video program to the alternative version of the same video program.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the alternative version is a version of the video program starting from a beginning of the video program.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the contextual content is displayed by the media system while the video program is being displayed by the media system.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the contextual content includes a graphical interface with the option.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the video server includes a video-on-demand server.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the contextual content further includes an option to select from a plurality of alternative versions of the video program, and wherein the plurality of alternative versions include video control capability, display format of the video program, or reduced commercial messaging.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the media system requests the alternative version from the video server when the option is selected.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the media system is connected with a third party content server when the option is selected, wherein the media system connects with the third party content server to obtain third party content from the third party content server at a specified time interval of the alternative version.

17. A computer-program product tangibly embodied in a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of a computing device, including instructions configured to cause one or more data processors to:

transmit one or more software applications configured for execution by a media system;

receive pixel data associated with a video frame of a video segment being displayed by the media system, wherein the video segment includes at least a portion of a version of a video program;

identify the video segment being displayed by the media system, wherein identifying the video segment includes comparing the pixel data with stored pixel data to find a closest match;

determine contextual content, wherein the contextual content is contextually related to the identified video segment, wherein the contextual content includes an option to switch to an alternative version of the video program, wherein the version and the alternative version are of a same video program, and wherein the alternative version is from a video server; and

transmit one or more software instructions, wherein the one or more software instructions, when received by the media system, cause a software application associated with the contextual content to execute on the media system, wherein the software application provides the contextual content to the media system, wherein selection of the option causes the media system to switch from the version of the video program to the alternative version of the same video program.

18. The computer-program product of claim 17 , wherein the alternative version is a version of the video program starting from a beginning of the video program.

19. The computer-program product of claim 17 , wherein the contextual content is displayed by the media system while the video program is being displayed by the media system.

20. The computer-program product of claim 17 , wherein the contextual content includes a graphical interface with the option.
