Abstract

A method for improving the performance of fracturing processes in oil production fields may rely on polymer coated particles carried in the fracturing fluid. The particles may include heavy substrates, such as sand, ceramic sand, or the like coated with polymers selected to absorb water, increasing the area and volume to travel more readily with the flow of fluid without settling out, or allowing the substrate to settle out. Ultimately, the substrate may become lodged in the fissures formed by the pressure or hydraulic fracturing, resulting in propping open of the fissures for improved productivity.

Claims (20)

1. A method for making self-suspending proppant particles, the method comprising:

mixing a volume of substrate particles with a liquid binder so that at least a portion of the volume of substrate particles are at least partly covered with the liquid binder on an outer surface, thereby forming binder-coated substrate particles;

using a water-in-oil emulsion to apply a first water-absorbing polymer to at least a portion of the binder-coated substrate particles so that the at least a portion of the binder-coated substrate particles are at least partly coated with the first water-absorbing polymer, thereby forming intermediate polymer-coated substrate particles, wherein the first water-absorbing polymer is about 30 mol. % anionic or about 40 mol. % anionic;

coating at least a portion of the intermediate polymer-coated substrate particles with a second water-absorbing polymer to thereby form polymer coated substrate particles; and

drying the polymer coated substrate particles to remove at least a portion of the water-in-oil emulsion to thereby form self-suspending proppant particles, each of the self-suspending proppant particles at least partly coated with the second water-absorbing polymer,

wherein, when the self-suspending proppant particles are added to a 1000 ppm CaCO 3 aqueous solution and shaken to incorporate, the self-suspending proppant particles remain suspended for at least 30 minutes at room temperature.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first water-absorbing polymer comprises an acrylamide and acrylate co-polymer.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second water-absorbing polymer comprises one of a polyacrylate and an acrylamide and acrylate co-polymer.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid binder comprises glycerol.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of an exterior surface of each of the self-suspending proppant particles comprises the second water-absorbing polymer in powdered foul′.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the molecular weight of the second water-absorbing polymer is different than the molecular weight of the first water-absorbing polymer.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first water-absorbing polymer is about 30 mol. % anionic.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second water-absorbing polymer is about 30 mol. % anionic or about 40 mol. % anionic.

9. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising adding a flowing agent to the self-suspending proppant particles.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the flowing agent comprises a sodium aluminosilicate.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the drying comprises exposing the polymer-coated substrate particles to heat.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second water-absorbing polymer is powdered prior to the coating at least a portion of the intermediate polymer-coated substrate particles with the second water-absorbing polymer.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first water-absorbing polymer is about 40 mol. % anionic.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second water-absorbing polymer is about 30 mol. % anionic.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second water-absorbing polymer is about 40 mol. % anionic.
