Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for pre-operatively planned shoulder surgery guides and implants. Pre-operative planning methods for designing glenoid placement guides and depth-control pins based on considerations of multiple factors affecting the outcome of shoulder surgery. Methods of using surgery guides and implants, including glenoid placement guides and depth-control pins, in patients undergoing shoulder surgery.

Claims (23)

1. A glenoid placement guide, comprising:

a hub;

a plurality of radial arms extending from the hub;

a plurality of peripheral guide structures, each of the peripheral guide structures affixed to a corresponding one of the radial arms, wherein each peripheral guide structure includes a patient-specific surface configured to engage a rim of a patient's glenoid at a predetermined location, and wherein each of the radial arms has a patient-specific length configured to align the corresponding peripheral guide structure with the rim of the patient's glenoid at the corresponding predetermined location;

a depth-control pin, wherein the depth-control pin comprises:

a cylindrical shaft having a first and a second end;

a threaded portion on the first end; a receiving portion on the second end; and

a collar located between the threaded portion and receiving portion;

a central port comprising a cylindrical opening passing through the hub, wherein the central port is partially defined by a cylindrical housing extending beyond an upper surface of the hub, wherein the cylindrical housing is configured to act as a depth guide indicator for a depth of the depth-control pin inserted through the cylindrical opening such that a collar of the depth-control pin is flush with an upper surface of the cylindrical housing; and a plurality of anchoring pin channels, wherein each channel comprises a cylindrical opening passing through the hub from the upper surface of the hub to a lower surface of the hub, the cylindrical opening configured to receive and guide an anchoring pin configured to anchor the glenoid placement guide to a glenoid surface when the peripheral guide structures are engaged with the rim of the patient's glenoid at the predetermined locations.

2. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein the central port comprising a cylindrical opening passing through the hub is configured to receive and guide the depth-control pin to a predetermined location on a glenoid surface.

3. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein the glenoid placement guide comprises a polymeric or metallic material.

4. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein the patient-specific surface of each of the peripheral guide structures comprises a cupped surface configured to align with the rim of the patient's glenoid at the corresponding predetermined location.

5. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein a contour of the patient-specific surface of each of the peripheral guide structures is determined through pre-operative planning by matching the patient-specific surface with a patient-specific three-dimensional model of the edge of the glenoid.

6. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein cylindrical shaft is configured to slidingly engage the cylindrical opening of the central port.

7. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein the threaded portion is configured to threadingly engage the glenoid surface.

8. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein the receiving portion is configured to engage a reaming device.

9. The glenoid placement guide of claim 1 , wherein the collar located between the threaded portion and receiving portion is configured to control the depth of a reaming device.

10. The glenoid placement guide of claim 4 , wherein the patient-specific surface of each of the peripheral guide structures is configured to wrap about the rim of the patient's glenoid at the corresponding predetermined location.

11. A glenoid placement guide kit comprising:

a glenoid placement guide of claim 1 ;

and

a reaming device.

12. The kit of claim 11 , further comprising one or more anchoring pins.
