Abstract

Various systems and methods for creating, storing, structuring, displaying, enhancing, and/or referencing publications and related content in an online user network are described. In some embodiments, document contents are stored in the form of individually addressable document elements, which can be displayed selectively based on display criteria received from a user.

Claims (30)

1. A method comprising:

representing one or more documents as ordered lists of individual document elements collectively constituting contents of the respective documents by storing, in one or more databases stored on one or more computer-readable media, for each of the one or more documents, (i) document-element entries for the individual document elements, each document-element entry comprising a unique document-element identifier and one or more document-element attributes characterizing a content of the respective document element, and (ii) at least one document-view data structure each specifying a selection and ordering of document elements as an ordered list of the document-element identifiers of at least some of the document elements; and

at a server, receiving, from a user, a request for one of the one or more documents, the request specifying one or more display criteria including an indication of a content selection; and

by a hardware processor of the server, responsive to the request, retrieving a document-view data structure for the requested document from the one or more computer-readable media, wherein the document-view data structure is selected based on the display criteria among a plurality of pre-computed document-view data structures stored for the requested document or wherein the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure are filtered based on the display criteria; and

causing display of only those document elements of the requested document that are included in the ordered list of the selected document-view data structure or are retained following the filtering.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein multiple document views comprising multiple respective selections of document elements are stored for the requested document, and wherein the document-view data structure is selected based on the display criteria among a plurality of pre-computed document-view data structures stored for the requested document.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure are filtered based on the display criteria.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the filtering is based on the document-element attributes of the document elements of the requested document.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the filtering is based on a document path selection specifying a selected portion of the requested document.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the filtering is based on an index referencing document elements.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selectively displaying contents related to the requested document based on the display criteria.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing each document in chunks collectively constituting the document, each chunk consecutively storing an ordered subset of the database entries for the document elements of the document, a size of the chunks being selected based on performance criteria associated with displaying the document.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the database entries for the document elements of one or more most frequently requested pre-computed views are each stored in a single chunk.

10. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more computer-readable media storing:

one or more databases storing, for each of one or more documents; (i) document-element entries for a plurality of individual respective document elements collectively constituting contents of the document, each document-element entry comprising a unique document-element identifier and one or more document-element attributes characterizing a content of the respective document element, and (ii) at least one document-view data structure each specifying a selection and ordering of document elements as an ordered list of the document-element identifiers of at least some of the document elements; and

instructions for execution by the one or more processors, the instructions causing the one or more processors upon receipt, from a user, of a request for one of the one or more documents, to customize the display of the requested document based on display criteria, including an indication of a content selection, specified in the request by:

retrieving a document-view data structure for the requested document from the one or more databases, wherein the document-view data structure is selected based on the display criteria among a plurality of pre-computed document-view data structures stored for the requested document or wherein the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure are filtered based on the display criteria; and

causing display of only those document elements of the requested document that are included in the ordered list of the selected document-view data structure or are retained following the filtering.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein multiple document-view data structures comprising multiple respective selections of document elements are stored for the requested document, and wherein the document-view data structure is selected based on the display criteria among a plurality of pre-computed document-view data structures stored for the requested document.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure are filtered based on the display criteria.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the the instructions cause the one or more processors to filter the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure based on the document-element attributes of the document elements of the requested document.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to filter the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure based on a document path selection specifying a selected portion of the requested document.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to filter the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure based on an index referencing document elements.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause contents related to the requested document to be displayed selectively based on the display criteria.

17. A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more hardware processors, cause the one or more hardware processors to:

receive a user request for a documents represented, in one or more databases stored on one or more computer-readable media, as database entries for a plurality of document elements collectively constituting contents of the document in conjunction with one or more document view data structures, each document element identified by a document-element identifier and its contents characterized by one or more document-element attributes, and each document view data structure specifying a selection and ordering of document elements as an ordered list of the document-element identifiers of at least some of the document elements, the request specifying one or more display criteria including an indication of a content selection;

responsive to the request, retrieve a document-view data structure for the requested document from the one or more computer-readable media, wherein the document-view data structure is selected based on the display criteria among a plurality of pre-computed document-view data structures stored for the requested document or wherein the document elements identified within the ordered list of document-element identifiers of the retrieved document-view data structure are filtered based on the display criteria; and

cause display of only those document elements of the requested document that are included in the ordered list of the selected document-view data structure or are retained following the filtering.
