Abstract

Heat not burn products comprising an encapsulated aerosol generating agent, the encapsulation having the effect of controlling the release of the agent during use of the heat not burn product. The encapsulation will control the timing of the release of the aerosol generating agent during the use of the heat not burn product, to allow greater control of the puff yield. In the case of some aerosol generating agents, the encapsulation may also increase the stability of the agent and/or prevent its migration within the product.

Claims (30)

1. A heat not burn product comprising:

an encapsulated aerosol generating agent, wherein the release of the aerosol generating agent during use of the product is gradual and sustained, controlled using different encapsulation materials or different encapsulation approaches to produce a desired puff yield of total particulate matter,

wherein the aerosol generating agent is selected from sorbitol, glycerol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, lactic acid, diacetin, triacetin, triethyl citrate, isopropyl myristate, methyl stearate, dimethyl dodecanedioate and dimethyl tetradecanedioate, and

wherein the encapsulation materials are selected from alginate, dextran, maltodextrin, cyclodextrin, pectin, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, cellulose ethers, gelatin, gum Arabic, gum ghatti, gum tragacanth, Karaya gum, locust bean gum, acacia gum, guar gum, quince seed gum, xanthan gums, agar gel, agarose gel, carrageenans gel, furoidan gel and furcellaran gel, carnauba wax, or a mixture thereof.

2. A product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is encapsulated using two or more different encapsulation materials, the encapsulation materials having different melting points.

3. A product as claimed in claim 2 , wherein at least one of the encapsulation materials is a polysaccharide and is at least one of alginate, dextran, maltodextrin, cyclodextrin or pectin.

4. A product as claimed in claim 2 , wherein at least one of the encapsulation materials is a cellulosic barrier material and is at least one of methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, or cellulose ethers.

5. A product as claimed in claim 2 , wherein at least one of the encapsulation materials is a gum and is at least one of gum Arabic, gum ghatti, gum tragacanth, Karaya gum, locust bean gum, acacia gum, guar gum, quince seed gum or xanthan gum.

6. A product as claimed in claim 2 , wherein at least one of the encapsulation materials is a gel and is at least one of agar, agarose, carrageenans, furoidan or furcellaran.

7. A product as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is carried by a particulate carrier material and at least one of the encapsulation materials is applied to the carrier material carrying the aerosol generating agent.

8. A product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is encapsulated using different thicknesses of encapsulation material, the thickness of the encapsulation material determining when the aerosol generating agent is released during use of the product.

9. A product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the distribution of the encapsulated aerosol generating agent within the heat not burn product controls the timing of the release of the aerosol generating agent during use of the product.

10. A product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is a polyol.

11. The product as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the polyol is at least one of sorbitol, glycerol, or a glycol.

12. The product as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the polyol is a glycol, and wherein the glycol is at least one of propylene glycol or triethylene glycol.

13. The product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is a non-polyol.

14. The product as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the non-polyol is at least one of an acid, an ester, or an aliphatic carboxylic acid ester.

15. The product as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the non-polyol is an acid, and wherein the acid is lactic acid.

16. The product as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the non-polyol is an ester, and wherein the ester is at least one of diacetin, triacetin, triethyl citrate or isopropyl myristate.

17. The product as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the non-polyol is an aliphatic carboxylic acid ester, and wherein the aliphatic carboxylic acid ester is at least one of methyl stearate, dimethyl dodecanedioate or dimethyl tetradecanedioate.

18. A product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is released during use of the heat not burn product so as to provide a substantially constant delivery of total particulate matter per puff.

19. A product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generating agent is released during use of the heat not burn product so as to provide a gradually increasing delivery of total particulate matter per puff.

20. A method comprising:

incorporating an encapsulated aerosol generating agent in a heat not burn product, wherein the aerosol generating agent is encapsulated using different encapsulation materials or different encapsulation approaches, in order to control the gradual and sustained release of the aerosol generating agent, so as to produce a desired puff yield of total particulate matter,

wherein the aerosol generating agent is selected from sorbitol, glycerol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, lactic acid, diacetin, triacetin, triethyl citrate, isopropyl myristate, methyl stearate, dimethyl dodecanedioate and dimethyl tetradecanedioate, and

wherein the encapsulation materials are selected from alginate, dextran, maltodextrin, cyclodextrin, pectin, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, gum Arabic, gum ghatti, gum tragacanth, Karaya gum, locust bean gum, acacia gum, guar gum, quince seed gum, xanthan gums, agar gel, agarose gel, carrageenans gel, furoidan gel and furcellaran gel, carnauba wax, or a mixture thereof.

21. A method for controlling the gradual and sustained release of an aerosol generating agent, so as to produce a desired puff yield of total particulate matter, in a heat not burn product, the method comprising:

including in the heat not burn product an encapsulated aerosol generating agent, wherein the encapsulated aerosol generating agent is encapsulated using different encapsulation materials or different encapsulation approaches,

wherein the aerosol generating agent is selected from sorbitol, glycerol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, lactic acid, diacetin, triacetin, triethyl citrate, isopropyl myristate, methyl stearate, dimethyl dodecanedioate and dimethyl tetradecanedioate, and

wherein the encapsulation materials are selected from alginate, dextran, maltodextrin, cyclodextrin, pectin, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, gum Arabic, gum ghatti, gum tragacanth, Karaya gum, locust bean gum, acacia gum, guar gum, quince seed gum, xanthan gums, agar gel, agarose gel, carrageenans gel, furoidan gel and furcellaran gel, carnauba wax, or a mixture thereof.
