Abstract

A flexible hose having an inner tube member made from a thermoplastic elastomeric material and an outer tube member made from a fabric like material. The inner tube member is secured to the outer tube member only at an inlet coupler and an outlet coupler. The inlet coupler is constructed to secure to a water supply provided from a conventional household water spigot. The outlet coupler incorporates a flow restrictor allowing the inner tube member to equalize in pressure with pressurized water received from the water supply. Pressurized water expands the elongated inner tube member longitudinally along a length of the inner tube member and laterally across a width of the inner tube member thereby substantially increasing the length of the hose to an expanded condition wherein the hose contracts to a substantially decreased length when there is a decrease in pressurized water.

Claims (41)

1. A hose comprising:

a flexible elongated outer tube member having a first end and a second end, an interior of said outer tube member being substantially hollow;

a flexible elongated inner tube member having a first end and a second end, an interior of said inner tube member being substantially hollow, said inner tube member is made from an elastic material having an elongation ratio between two and six times its contracted or unexpanded length;

an inlet coupler secured to said first end of said inner and said outer tube members, said inlet coupler having a flow thru aperture with an inlet tubular extension section sealed to a first open end of said inner tube member and secured to a first open end of said outer tube member;

an outlet coupler secured to said second end of said inner and said outer tube members, said outlet coupler having a flow thru aperture with an outlet tubular extension section sealed to a second open end of said inner tube member and secured to a second open end of said outer tube member;

and a flow restrictor secured to said outlet coupler,

whereby said flow restrictor creates an increase in water pressure between said inlet coupler and said outlet coupler upon the introduction of pressurized water through said inlet coupler to expand said inner tube member longitudinally along a length of said inner tube member and laterally across a width of said inner tube member thereby substantially increasing a length of said inner tube member to an expanded condition within said outer tube member, wherein said inner tube contracts to a substantially decreased or relaxed length when there is a decrease in water pressure between said inlet coupler causing said outer tube member to be gathered into a contracted state.

2. The hose of claim 1 wherein said outer tube member is about 0.5 mm thick.

3. The hose of claim 1 wherein said outer tube member is expandable to a diameter of about 20 mm.

4. The hose of claim 1 wherein said flow restrictor is an on/off ball valve.

5. The hose of claim 4 wherein said on/off ball valve engages at least one gasket to form a watertight seal when said ball valve is in an off position.

6. The hose according to claim 1 wherein said inlet coupling section is a conventional female hose thread connector available for coupling to a household spigot having pressurized water.

7. The hose according to claim 1 wherein said outlet coupling section includes a conventional male threaded hose connector available for attachment to a conventional spray nozzle.

8. A hose for water comprising:

a flexible elongated outer tube having a first end and a second end, an interior of said outer tube being substantially hollow;

a flexible elastic elongated inner tube having a first end and a second end, an interior of said inner tube being substantially hollow, said inner tube member is made from an elastic material having an elongation ratio between two and six times its contracted or unexpanded length;

a female coupler including a tubular extension which extends into the interior of the first end of said inner tube, the extension having a hollow interior through which water can flow; and a first securing device surrounding said first end of said inner and said outer tubes securing said first end of said inner and outer tubes to said female coupler tubular extension;

a male coupler including a tubular extension which extends into the interior of the inner tube, the extension having a hollow interior through which water can flow; and a second securing device encompassing said second end of said inner and said outer tubes securing said second end of said inner and outer tubes to said male coupler tubular extension;

said inner and outer tubes being attached at the couplers;

said female coupler coupling said hose to a source of pressurized water, said male coupler coupling said hose to a water flow restrictor;

whereby, when water under pressure is introduced into the female coupler, said elongated inner tube expands longitudinally along a length of said inner tube and laterally across a width of said inner tube thereby increasing a length of said hose to an expanded condition; and

wherein the water flow restrictor is configured to vary the amount of restriction of the water under pressure that is released from the hose while maintaining the length of the hose in the expanded condition.

9. The hose of claim 8 , wherein the water flow restrictor includes a nozzle and an internal valve that permits, limits, and stops a flow of water through the nozzle.

10. The hose of claim 8 , wherein the water flow restrictor comprises a nozzle that provides various amounts of restriction of water at the second coupling of the hose depending on how large a opening is in the nozzle, a smaller opening decreasing a release of water from the hose with higher water pressure and water volume inside the hose, and a larger opening increasing the release of water fluid from the hose with lower water pressure and water volume inside the hose.

11. The hose of claim 8 , wherein, when the water flow restrictor creates a selected excess water pressure in the hose, the elastic inner tube expands laterally and longitudinally until its lateral and longitudinal expansion became constrained by the outer tube to a maximum length and width of the outer tube.

12. The hose of claim 8 wherein the outer tube decreases in length when there is no pressure within inner tube.

13. A hose for water comprising:

a flexible elongated outer tube having a first end and a second end, an interior of said outer tube being substantially hollow;

a flexible elastic elongated inner tube having a first end and a second end, an interior of said inner tube being substantially hollow, said inner tube member is made from an elastic material having an elongation ratio between two and six times its contracted or unexpanded length;

a female coupler secured to said first end of said inner and said outer tubes;

a male coupler secured to said second end of said inner and said outer tubes;

said inner and outer tubes being attached at the couplers;

said female coupler coupling said hose to a source of pressurized water, said male coupler coupling said hose to a water flow restrictor;

whereby, when water under pressure is introduced into the female coupler, said elongated inner tube expands longitudinally along a length of said inner tube and laterally across a width of said inner tube thereby increasing a length of said hose to an expanded condition;

wherein the water flow restrictor is configured to vary the amount of restriction of the water under pressure that is released from the hose while maintaining the length of the hose in the expanded condition; and

wherein removal of water under pressure allows the outer tube to contract from the expanded length whereby an inner surface of the outer tube catches on an outside surface of the elastic inner tube helping the outer tube to contract the inner tube.

14. The hose of claim 13 , wherein the water flow restrictor includes a nozzle and an internal valve that permits, limits, and stops a flow of water through the nozzle.

15. The hose of claim 13 , wherein the water flow restrictor comprises a nozzle that provides various amounts of restriction of water at the second coupling of the hose depending on how large a opening is in the nozzle, a smaller opening decreasing a release of water from the hose with higher water pressure and water volume inside the hose, and a larger opening increasing the release of water fluid from the hose with lower water pressure and water volume inside the hose.

16. The hose of claim 13 , wherein, when the water flow restrictor creates a selected excess water pressure in the hose, the elastic inner tube expands laterally and longitudinally until its lateral and longitudinal expansion became constrained by the outer tube to a maximum length and width of the outer tube.

17. The hose of claim 13 , wherein each coupler includes a tubular extension which extends into the interiors of the inner tube, the extension having a hollow interior through which water can flow, and a securing device encompasses the outer sleeve and the inner tube for securing them together.

18. The hose of claim 13 , wherein, the outer tube decreases in length when there is no pressure within inner tube.
