Abstract

An undercarriage light assembly includes a light element, a translucent jacket exterior to and surrounding the light element, and an outer housing positioned exterior to and surrounding at least a portion of the translucent jacket. The outer housing includes a first side, a second side connected to the first side, and a third side connected to the second side. The first and third sides are angled toward one another. An opening between the first and third sides allows for light to pass from the light element through the outer housing.

Claims (29)

1. An undercarriage light assembly comprising:

a light element extending for a length and configured to project light in an outward direction, the light element comprising an at least partially translucent housing configured to diffuse light emitted from the light element, the light element being a linear light having a width;

a translucent jacket positioned exterior to and encasing at least a portion of the light element such that substantially no gap exists between the translucent jacket and the encased portion of the light element, the translucent jacket having a hollow interior and an opening at each end;

an opaque outer housing extending for a length and positioned exterior to and surrounding at least a portion of the translucent jacket to at least partially constrain the light emitted from the light element, the outer housing comprising:

a first side;

a second side connected to the first side;

a third side connected to the second side;

wherein the first and third sides are angled toward one another; and

an opening between the first and third side wherein the distance between the first side and second side is less than the width of the light element, the opening configured to allow light from the light element to pass therethrough.

2. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 1 further comprising a plug positioned within the opening in the translucent jacket.

3. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 2 , wherein the plug is configured to seal the opening in the translucent jacket.

4. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 2 , wherein the light element is held in a floating arrangement within the translucent jacket by the plug.

5. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 1 , wherein the outer housing is formed of a material having a greater hardness than the translucent jacket.

6. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 5 , wherein the outer housing is formed of aluminum.

7. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 5 , wherein the outer housing is formed through an extrusion process.

8. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 1 , wherein the opening between the first and third side has a linear shape.

9. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 1 further comprising an end cap connected to an end of the outer housing.

10. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 9 , wherein the translucent jacket is held in a floating arrangement within the outer housing by the end cap.

11. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 1 , wherein the outer housing is connected to the underside of a vehicle.

12. An undercarriage light assembly comprising:

a light element extending for a length and configured to project light in an outward direction, the light element comprising an at least partially translucent housing configured to diffuse light emitted from the light element, the light element being a linear light having a width;

a translucent jacket positioned exterior to and encasing the light element such that substantially no gap exists between the translucent jacket and the encased portion of the light element, the translucent jacket having a hollow interior and an opening at each end;

an opaque outer housing positioned exterior to and surrounding at least a portion of the translucent jacket to at least partially constrain the light emitted from the light element, the outer housing comprising:

a first side;

a second side connected to the first side;

a third side connected to the second side;

an opening between the first and third side wherein the distance between the first side and second side is less than the width of the light element, the opening configured to allow light from the light element to pass therethrough, wherein the outer housing is connected to the underside of a vehicle and configured to project light in a downward direction toward the ground that the vehicle is resting on.

13. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 12 wherein the undercarriage light assembly is configured to be mounted to the underside of the vehicle frame between a vehicle pinch weld and a door trim panel.

14. The undercarriage light assembly of claim 12 , wherein the outer housing is connected to the underside of the vehicle by way of an adhesive foam strip.
