Abstract

A method and system disclosed herein can be used to determine relationships between objects, determining which of those relationships are significant for a specific action, and determining physical dependencies between the objects. The method and system can be used to perform actions consistent with integrity constraints, and therefore, performs the actions in the correct order with a reduced likelihood of errors. The method and system are highly beneficial in that they can significantly enhance content management and can be implemented without having to write new or edit existing applications. Also, existing content data and applications may be used without any changes. Accordingly, the method and system can be advantageously useful in deploying or otherwise pushing out new content to existing content systems.

Claims (33)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a content management system from an application or source computer, an indication that a change has been made to a data object in a content database, the content management system configured for managing data objects in the content database through reference objects separate from the data objects in the content database, the content management system running on a first computer communicatively connected to the application or source computer over a network;

determining, by the content management system using a relationship table, that the data object is associated with a reference object, the reference object including a complex record indicating proxying relationships between the reference object and the data object stored in the content database, the relationship table residing in the content management system, the reference object managed by the content management system;

modifying, by the content management system, the reference object to reflect the change made to the data object in the content database; and

deploying the reference object modified by the content management system from the first computer to a second computer in the network.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data object is associated with a plurality of reference objects managed by the content management system and wherein the reference object is one of the plurality of reference objects associated with the data object in the content database.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the reference object is associated with a plurality of data objects in the content database and wherein the data object is one of the plurality of data objects associated with the reference object managed by the content management system.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein deploying the reference object modified by the content management system comprises deploying another one of the plurality of data objects associated with the reference object managed by the content management system before deploying the reference object modified by the content management system.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein deploying the reference object modified by the content management system comprises deploying the data object associated with the reference object managed by the content management system before deploying the reference object modified by the content management system.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data object represents a record, a file, or data item in the content database.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein user access to the data object in the content database is by way of the reference object managed by the content management system.

8. A content management system, comprising:

a first computer having at least one processor, at least one non-transitory computer readable medium, and stored instructions translatable by the at least one processor to perform:

receiving, from an application or source computer, an indication that a change has been made to a data object in a content database, the content management system configured for managing data objects in the content database through reference objects separate from the data objects in the content database, the application or source computer communicatively connected to the first computer over a network;

determining, using a relationship table, that the data object is associated with a reference object, the reference object including a complex record indicating proxying relationships between the reference object and the data object stored in the content database, the relationship table residing in the content management system, the reference object managed by the content management system;

modifying the reference object to reflect the change made to the data object in the content database; and

deploying the reference object modified by the content management system from the first computer to a second computer in the network.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the data object is associated with a plurality of reference objects managed by the content management system and wherein the reference object is one of the plurality of reference objects associated with the data object in the content database.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the reference object is associated with a plurality of data objects in the content database and wherein the data object is one of the plurality of data objects associated with the reference object managed by the content management system.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein deploying the reference object modified by the content management system comprises deploying another one of the plurality of data objects associated with the reference object managed by the content management system before deploying the reference object modified by the content management system.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein deploying the reference object modified by the content management system comprises deploying the data object associated with the reference object managed by the content management system before deploying the reference object modified by the content management system.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the data object represents a record, a file, or data item in the content database.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein user access to the data object in the content database is by way of the reference object managed by the content management system.

15. A computer program product for implementing a content management system on a first computer, the computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions translatable by at least one processor to perform:

receiving, from an application or source computer, an indication that a change has been made to a data object in a content database, the content management system configured for managing data objects in the content database through reference objects separate from the data objects in the content database, the application or source computer communicatively connected to the first computer over a network;

determining, using a relationship table, that the data object is associated with a reference object, the reference object including a complex record indicating proxying relationships between the reference object and the data object stored in the content database, the relationship table residing in the content management system, the reference object managed by the content management system;

modifying the reference object to reflect the change made to the data object in the content database; and

deploying the reference object modified by the content management system from the first computer to a second computer in the network.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the data object is associated with a plurality of reference objects managed by the content management system and wherein the reference object is one of the plurality of reference objects associated with the data object in the content database.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the reference object is associated with a plurality of data objects in the content database and wherein the data object is one of the plurality of data objects associated with the reference object managed by the content management system.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein deploying the reference object modified by the content management system comprises deploying another one of the plurality of data objects associated with the reference object managed by the content management system before deploying the reference object modified by the content management system.

19. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein deploying the reference object modified by the content management system comprises deploying the data object associated with the reference object managed by the content management system before deploying the reference object modified by the content management system.

20. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the data object represents a record, a file, or data item in the content database.
