Abstract

An antenna board for wirelessly delivering power, including a connector configured to: (i) connect with any one of a plurality of electrical ports of a transmitter board, including a first electrical port of the plurality of electrical ports, and (ii) receive an electrical signal from the first electrical port when the connector is connected with the first electrical port. The antenna board further includes antenna element(s) configured to, when the connector is connected with the first electrical port, transmit radio frequency (RF) power transmission waves using the electrical signal received from the first port. Each of the RF power transmission waves constructively interferes with at least one other RF power transmission wave of the RF power transmission waves at a receiver within a transmission field of the antenna board and energy from the RF power transmission waves is used by the receiver to power and/or charge the receiver.

Claims (54)

1. An antenna board for wirelessly delivering power to a receiver device, the antenna board comprising:

a connector configured to:

detachably connect with any one of a plurality of electrical ports of a transmitter board, including a first electrical port of the plurality of electrical ports, and

receive an electrical signal from the first electrical port when the connector is connected with the first electrical port; and

one or more antenna elements configured to, when the connector is connected with the first electrical port, transmit radio frequency (RF) power transmission waves using the electrical signal received from the first electrical port, wherein:

each of the RF power transmission waves constructively interferes with at least one other RF power transmission wave of the RF power transmission waves at a receiver device within a transmission field of the antenna board; and

energy from the RF power transmission waves is used by the receiver device to power and/or charge the receiver device.

2. The antenna board according to claim 1 , wherein the transmitter board comprises a processor configured to activate the first electrical port when the connector of the antenna board is connected with the first electrical port.

3. The antenna board according to claim 2 , wherein:

the processor of the transmitter board is further configured to adjust one or more transmission characteristics of the RF power transmission waves to cause each of the RF power transmission waves to constructively interfere with at least one other RF power transmission wave of the RF power transmission waves at the receiver device; and

the one or more transmission characteristics of the RF power transmission waves include one or more of phase, amplitude, frequency, and gain.

4. The antenna board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the one or more antenna elements are made of ceramic, and

the ceramic is alumina.

5. The antenna board according to claim 1 , wherein:

an antenna element of the one or more antenna elements is a resonator element configured to radiate at least some of the RF power transmission waves, and

the resonator element is embedded in a substrate of the antenna board.

6. The antenna board according to claim 5 , wherein:

the resonator element is cylindrical, and

the substrate is cylindrical.

7. The antenna board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the one or more antenna elements are embedded in a casting of a dielectric of the antenna board, and

the casting is silicon.

8. The antenna board according to claim 1 , wherein each antenna element of the one or more antenna elements comprises an antenna mount defining an opening configured to operate as a resonator for transmitting at least some of the RF power transmission waves.

9. The antenna board according to claim 8 , wherein the resonator is configured as a Yagi antenna.

10. The antenna board according to claim 1 , wherein the connector of the antenna board is frictionally engaged to the first electrical port.

11. A method of wirelessly delivering power to a receiver device, the method comprising:

at an antenna board comprising a connector and one or more antenna elements:

connecting, via the connector, the antenna board to a first electrical port of a transmitter board, wherein the transmitter board includes a plurality of electrical boards, including the first electrical port;

after connecting the antenna board to the first electrical port:

receiving an electrical signal from the first electrical port;

transmitting, via the one or more antenna elements, radio frequency (RF) power transmission waves using the electrical signal received from the first electrical port, wherein:

each of the RF power transmission waves constructively interferes with at least one other RF power transmission wave of the RF power transmission waves at a receiver device within a transmission field of the antenna board; and

energy from the RF power transmission waves is used by the receiver device to power and/or charge the receiver device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the transmitter board further includes a processor; and

the processor of the transmitter board activates the first electrical port after connecting the antenna board to the first electrical port.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

the processor of the transmitter board adjusts one or more transmission characteristics of the RF power transmission waves to cause each of the RF power transmission waves to constructively interfere with at least one other RF power transmission wave of the RF power transmission waves at the receiver device; and

the one or more transmission characteristics of the RF power transmission waves include one or more of phase, amplitude, frequency, and gain.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the one or more antenna elements are made of ceramic, and

the ceramic is alumina.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

an antenna element of the one or more antenna elements is a resonator element configured to radiate at least some of the RF power transmission waves; and

the resonator element is embedded in a substrate of the antenna board.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the resonator element is cylindrical, and

the substrate is cylindrical.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the one or more antenna elements are embedded in a casting of a dielectric of the antenna board, and

the casting is silicon.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein each antenna element of the one or more antenna elements comprises an antenna mount defining an opening configured to operate as a resonator for transmitting at least some of the RF power transmission waves.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the connector of the antenna board is frictionally engaged to the first electrical port.
