Abstract

A system and method that allows mobile device applications to receive changes in registration status from application services that are accessed via an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Applications on a mobile device subscribe to receive notifications of changes in registration status for requested services. When a change to the registration status of a service occurs, a notification message is transmitted to the application on the mobile device. Notifications of changes in status are thereby received by each application on a per-application-service basis. In some embodiments, when a request to register with an application service fails, the corresponding notification message includes a reason for the failure. In some embodiments, notification messages are originated by a registration manager that operates in the IMS and transmitted to an IMS client operating on a mobile device. In some embodiments, notification messages are originated by each application service and transmitted directly to subscribed applications.

Claims (50)

1. A computer-implemented method in a mobile device to receive service notifications from registered application services that are accessed via an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the method comprising:

at the mobile device, requesting, via an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), registration of at least one application on the mobile device with two or more associated services;

wherein each of the services is provided via a computer server;

receiving, on the mobile device, two or more notifications from the two or more services,

wherein the received notification indicates, on a per-application-service basis, the status of the corresponding service,

wherein at least one received notification indicates a failure of the corresponding service and information regarding a reason for the failure of the corresponding service, and

wherein the received notification is received by the application for which the notification is intended; and

in response to determining that the received notification indicates that the registration has failed, taking at least one of the following actions (a), (b), (c), or (d):

(a) displaying an indication as to whether the failure is temporary in nature;

(b) displaying an indication that the failure will remain in effect until a specified action is taken;

(c) registering the corresponding application with one or more different services; or

(d) halting operation of the corresponding application on the mobile device.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the two or more notifications include an indication of whether each requested registration is active or terminated.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising deregistering the corresponding application on the mobile device if the received notification indicates that the registration is terminated.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one service is a location-based service or a multimedia telephony service.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one service is a video conferencing and sharing service, or an instant messaging and presence service.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the nature of the failure corresponds to a server that is temporarily offline.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the specified action is paying an overdue bill or agreeing to pay for a service.

8. A computer-implemented method of providing service status notifications to mobile devices for services that are accessed via an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the method comprising:

receiving, from two or more mobile devices that are registered on an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), requests to receive notifications of status changes of services accessed by the two or more mobile devices via an IMS, wherein each service is provided via a computer server;

receiving at least one notification from services, wherein the notification provides a status of a corresponding service on a per-application-service basis;

identifying one or more mobile devices that are associated with the service in the received notification; and

for the received notification:

providing the received notification to the identified one or more mobile devices that are associated with the service,

wherein the notification indicates the status of the service and an indication of a reason for the status of the service; and

in response to determining that the received notification indicates a terminated registration:

providing a notification that a failure is temporary;

providing a notification of a particular action to take in order to clear a failure;

registering an application on the one or more mobile devices with one or more different services; or

halting operation of an application on the one or more mobile devices.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the received status indicates whether the requested service is active or terminated.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein at least one service is a location-based service or a multimedia telephony service.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein at least one service is a video conferencing and sharing service, or an instant messaging and presence service.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the failure results from a server that is temporarily offline.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the particular action is paying an overdue bill or paying for an additional service.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the reason for the received status is contained in an extensible markup language (XML) document.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, excluding transitory instructions, and storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of a mobile device, cause the mobile device to execute a method to receive changes in registration status from services that are accessed via an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the method comprising:

receiving, on the mobile device, a request to register at least one application on the mobile device with at least one service accessed via an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), the at least one service being provided via a computer server;

transmitting, via the IMS, the registration request to at least two or more associated services;

receiving, by the at least one associated application on the mobile device, one or more notifications regarding the requested registration, wherein the one or more notifications indicate, on a per-application-service basis, a registration status of a service and an indication of a reason for the registration status of the service; and

in response to determining that one of the received notifications indicates a terminated registration, taking at least one of the following actions (a), (b), (c), or (d):

(a) displaying an indication as to whether a failure is temporary in nature;

(b) displaying an indication that a failure will remain in effect until a specified action is taken;

(c) registering the at least one application on the mobile device with one or more different services; or

(d) halting operation of the at least one application on the mobile device.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the reason for the registration status is contained in an extensible markup language (XML) document.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the mobile device to deregister the associated application on the mobile device in response to determining that the received notification indicates a terminated registration.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein at least one service is a location-based service, a telephony service, or a video conferencing and sharing service.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the nature of the failure corresponds to a server that is temporarily offline.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the specified action is paying an overdue bill or agreeing to pay for a service.
