Abstract

An entertainment device initiates a configuration process of a controlling device in response to a change in an audio visual entertainment system configuration in which at least one of a plurality devices is connected to the entertainment device as an audio and/or visual source and at least one of the plurality of devices is connected to the entertainment device as an audio and/or visual output destination for the entertainment device.

Claims (10)

1. An entertainment system, comprising:

a controlling device; and

an audio/visual (“A/V”) device adapted to receive a media from an Internet server and to route the received media to a display device for rendering;

wherein the A/V device comprises a processing device and a non-transient, computer readable media having stored thereon instructions which, when executed by the processing device, cause the A/V device to determine if a new display device has been coupled to an A/V output port of the A/V device and, when it is determined that a new display device has been coupled to the A/V output port of the A/V device, to use device identifier data received from the new display device to cause the controlling device to be configured to issue a volume control command to the new display device, via use of a command communication protocol recognizable by the new display device, in response to an activation of a volume control input element of the controlling device with the controlling device being otherwise configured to issue a transport control command communication to the A/V device, via use of a command communication protocol recognizable by the A/V device, in response to an activation of a media playback control input element of the controlling device with the transport control command communication being used by the A/V device to control a rendering of media that is being received by the AV device and that is being routed to the new display device.

2. The entertainment system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the A/V device to determine if a new display device has been coupled to an A/V output port of the A/V device by causing the A/V device to monitor the A/V output port of the A/V device for indicia of a new display device.

3. The entertainment system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the indicia of a new display device comprises a detected change in a signal that is being provided to the A/V device via use of the A/V output port of the A/V device.

4. The entertainment system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the indicia of a new display device comprises a detected addition of a cable being coupled to the A/V output port of the A/V device.

5. The entertainment system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the indicia of a new display device comprises a detected change in device identifier data that is being provided to the A/V device via use of the A/V output port of the A/V device.

6. The entertainment system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the indicia of a new display device comprises a detected change in device capability data that is being provided to the A/V device via use of the A/V output port of the A/V device.

7. The entertainment system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the indicia of a new display device comprises a detected change in transmission bit rates that are being provided to the A/V device via use of the A/V output port of the A/V device.
