Abstract

Some embodiments of a portable infusion pump system can be configured to deliver medicine (e.g., insulin or the like) to a user and to deliver media content to a user. The media content can include, for example, MP3 music and other audio/video data stored in a memory device in the portable system. Thus, in particular embodiments, the portable infusion pump system can serve a dual purpose of providing medication and entertainment for the user from a compact and unobtrusive device.

Claims (49)

1. A medical infusion pump system, comprising:

a portable, wearable housing defining an interior space to receive insulin;

a pump drive system positioned in the portable, wearable housing and configured to dispense insulin to a user from the portable, wearable housing when the insulin is received in the space; and

a controller in communication with the pump drive system positioned in the portable, wearable housing so as to transmit activation signals for the pump drive system, the controller including a user interface comprising at least a display device and an audio output device, the user interface allowing a user to request that a bolus of insulin be dispensed from the portable, wearable housing; the controller further including one or more memory devices configured to store digital audio content for playback through the audio output device, the one or more memory devices further storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of the controller, cause the controller to perform operations comprising:

playing the digital audio content;

determining that a first alarm condition of the infusion pump system has occurred, wherein the first alarm condition is indicative of a problem with operation of the infusion pump system;

identifying that the first alarm condition is an alarm condition is of a type that indicates a problem with operation of the infusion pump system that does not require immediate user intervention;

in response to identifying that the first alarm condition is of a type that does not require immediate intervention, temporarily interrupting the playback of the digital audio content, issuing an alert of a first type, and automatically resuming playback of the digital audio content without requiring intervention of the user;

determining that a second alarm condition of the infusion pump system has occurred, wherein the second alarm condition is indicative of a problem with operation of the infusion pump system;

identifying that the second alarm condition is an alarm condition is of a type that indicates a problem with operation of the infusion pump system that requires user intervention;

in response to identifying that the second alarm condition is of a type that requires intervention, stopping playback of the digital audio content and issuing an alert of a second type;

receiving input indicative of user acknowledgment of the second alarm condition;

resuming, in response to receiving the input indicative of user acknowledgement of the second alarm condition, playback of the digital audio content.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to output a visual alert through the display device, the visual alert being indicative of the first alarm condition.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the input indicative of user acknowledgment of the second alarm condition comprises user input received via the user interface indicating that the detected alarm condition has been resolved.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second alert is an audible alert and wherein the controller is further configured to determine that the second alarm condition is not resolved and continue outputting the audible alert through the audio output device in response to determining that the second alarm condition is not resolved.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is further configured to enter an emergency mode of operation in response to determining that the second alarm condition is not resolved.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein entering the emergency mode of operation includes outputting a series of incrementally louder alarms.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein entering the emergency mode of operation includes halting one or more non-medical features to preserve battery power.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface of the controller is configured to contemporaneously display insulin delivery information and media content playback information on a display screen of the user interface.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second alert is an audible alert and wherein the audible alert includes instructions on how to respond to the second detected alarm condition.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second alarm condition comprises an occlusion in a medicine flow path of the medical infusion pump system.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first alarm condition comprises a low medicine volume state.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second alarm condition comprises a low power state of the pump drive system.

13. A method of using a medical infusion pump system, comprising:

outputting digital audio content through an audio output device of a medical infusion pump system, the medical infusion pump system comprising:

a portable, wearable housing defining an interior space to receive insulin;

a pump drive system positioned in the portable, wearable housing and configured to dispense insulin to a user from the portable, wearable housing when the insulin is received in the space; and

a controller in communication with the pump drive system positioned in the portable, wearable housing so as to transmit activation signals for the pump drive system, the controller including a user interface comprising at least a display device and the audio output device, the controller further including a memory device that stores the digital audio content for playback through the audio output device;

detecting, by the controller, a first alarm condition of the medical infusion pump system wherein the first alarm condition is indicative of a problem with operation of the infusion pump system;

identifying that the first alarm condition is an alarm condition is of a type that indicates a problem with operation of the infusion pump system that does not require immediate user intervention;

stopping, in response to detecting the first alarm condition, playback of the digital audio content through the audio output device;

outputting, in response to detecting the first alarm condition and after stopping playback of the digital audio content, a first audible alert through the audio output device, the first audible alert being indicative of the first alarm condition; and

after outputting the first audible alert and in response to determining that the first alarm condition is an alarm condition of the type that does not require immediate intervention, automatically resuming playback of the digital audio content without requiring intervention of the user;

detecting, by the controller, a second alarm condition of the medical infusion pump system wherein the second alarm condition is indicative of a problem with operation of the infusion pump system;

identifying that the second alarm condition is an alarm condition is of a type that indicates a problem with operation of the infusion pump system that requires user intervention;

stopping, in response to detecting the second alarm condition, playback of the digital audio content through the audio output device;

outputting, in response to detecting the second alarm condition and after stopping playback of the digital audio content, a second audible alert through the audio output device, the second audible alert being indicative of the second alarm condition;

receiving input indicative of user acknowledgment of the second alarm condition;

resuming, in response to receiving the input indicative of user acknowledgement of the second alarm condition, playback of the digital audio content.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising displaying, on the display device, a visual alert indicative of the second alarm condition, the visual alert including instructions on how to respond to the detected alarm condition.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

determining, by the controller, that the second alarm condition is not resolved; and

continuing to output the second audible alert through the audio output device in response to determining that the detected alarm condition is not resolved.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising entering, by the controller, an emergency mode of operation in response to determining that the second alarm condition is not resolved.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein entering the emergency mode of operation includes halting one or more non-medical features to preserve battery power.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein receiving input indicative of user acknowledgment of the second alarm condition comprises receiving user input on the user interface indicating that the detected alarm condition has been resolved.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second alarm condition comprises an occlusion in a medicine flow path of the medical infusion pump system.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first alarm condition comprises a low medicine volume state.
