Abstract

Intrauterine devices and methods for facilitating deployment thereof using a bumper are disclosed. In one embodiment, an intrauterine device comprises a structure including a first central support member and a deployment mechanism coupled to the first central support member. The intrauterine device further comprises a bumper positioned at a distal end of a second central support member and at a more distal position relative to a distal end of the structure so as to prevent the distal end of the structure from contacting the fundus of the uterus of a patient during deployment of the deployment mechanism. In another embodiment, the intrauterine device comprises a bumper coupled to the deployment mechanism and configured to move from a more distal to a more proximal position relative to a distal end of the structure.

Claims (20)

1. An intrauterine ablation device, comprising:

an elongate member;

an energy applicator operatively coupled to a distal end portion of the elongate member, the energy applicator comprising a tissue contacting member and an expandable-collapsible support structure underlying the tissue contacting member, the expandable-collapsible support structure comprising a first flexure having a first flexure distal free end, and a second flexure having a second flexure distal free end, wherein the expandable-collapsible support structure is adjustable between a collapsed configuration, in which the first and second flexure distal free ends are closely apposed to one another so that the energy applicator is configured for transcervical introduction into a uterus, and an expanded configuration, in which the first and second flexure distal free ends extend laterally away from one another in opposite directions; and

a distal bumper coupled to the expandable-collapsible support structure, wherein at least a portion of the distal bumper is positioned distally of an outer surface of the tissue contacting member, wherein the distal bumper is configured to contact a fundal wall of the uterus upon distal advancement of the energy applicator within the uterus while the expandable-collapsible support structure is in the collapsed configuration to thereby prevent the first and second flexure distal free ends from engaging the fundal wall during a subsequent transition of the expandable-collapsible support structure from the collapsed configuration to the expanded configuration while the distal bumper is contacting the fundal wall.

2. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 1 , wherein the distal bumper is configured to conform to the fundal wall.

3. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 2 , wherein the distal bumper has an elongated configuration and a midpoint, wherein the midpoint is distal to the energy applicator.

4. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 2 , wherein the distal bumper comprises a flexible ribbon and/or a thin flexible membrane configured to contact the fundal wall.

5. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 4 , wherein the distal bumper comprises an outer surface configured to contact the fundal wall and an inner surface opposite the outer surface, wherein at least portion of the inner surface is spaced away from the outer surface of the tissue contacting member.

6. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 1 , wherein the distal bumper extends transversely between the first and second flexure distal free ends when the expandable-collapsible support structure is in the expanded configuration.

7. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 1 , wherein the distal bumper comprises an electrically conductive material.

8. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 7 , wherein the distal bumper comprises a porous material, a hydrophilic material, a conductive polymer, a material infused with an electrically conductive particulate, or a combination of said materials.

9. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 1 , further comprising a tubular member, wherein the elongate member is at least partially slidably disposed within the tubular member.

10. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 1 , wherein the distal bumper is coupled to a distal portion of the first flexure and a distal portion of the second flexure and extends transversely therebetween.

11. An intrauterine ablation device, comprising:

a handle;

an energy applicator operatively coupled to the handle, the energy applicator comprising a tissue contacting member and an expandable-collapsible support structure underlying the tissue contacting member, the expandable-collapsible support structure comprising a first flexure having a first flexure distal free end, and a second flexure having a second flexure distal free end, wherein the expandable-collapsible support structure is adjustable between a collapsed configuration, in which the first and second flexure distal free ends are closely apposed to one another so that the energy applicator is configured for transcervical introduction into a uterus, and an expanded configuration, in which the first and second flexure distal free ends extend laterally away from one another in opposite directions; and

a distal bumper coupled to the energy applicator, wherein the distal bumper is positioned distally of an outer surface of the tissue contacting member,

wherein the distal bumper is configured to contact a fundal wall of the uterus upon distal advancement of the energy applicator within the uterus while the expandable-collapsible support structure in the collapsed configuration to thereby prevent the first and second flexure distal free ends from engaging the fundal wall during a subsequent transition of the expandable-collapsible support structure from the collapsed configuration to the expanded configuration while the distal bumper is contacting the fundal wall.

12. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 11 , wherein the distal bumper forms a C-shape when the expandable-collapsible support structure is in the collapsed configuration.

13. The intrauterine ablation device of claim 11 , wherein the distal bumper has an elongated configuration and a midpoint, wherein the midpoint is distal to the energy applicator.
