Abstract

The present disclosure relates, according to some embodiments, to orthopedic implantable device technology, and more specifically to implantable devices for use in stabilizing the occipitocervical junction and the cervical spine. For example, the disclosure relates to embodiments of an implantable orthopedic assembly generally comprising an occipital plate and one or more repositionable clamping assemblies for securing a stabilizing rod at a nonzero distance from a plate surface. One or more rails may extend laterally from a plate to support a clamping assemblies.

Claims (45)

1. A method of constructing an implantable orthopedic assembly comprising an occipital plate, at least one rail rigidly coupled to and extending laterally from the occipital plate, and at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly enclosing a portion of the at least one rail, the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly adapted for securing a received portion of a stabilizing rod, the method comprising:

positioning a pressure cap of the repositionable rod attachment assembly within a receptacle of a saddle body of the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly;

positioning a surface of the at least one rail against a surface of a slide body of the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly;

installing a retention ring in the slide body, the retention ring being distinct from the slide body and the saddle body;

uniting the saddle body with the slide body, wherein the at least one rail contacts the pressure cap; and

securing the slide body to the saddle body with the retention ring.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning a spring between the pressure cap and the saddle body of the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly, wherein the spring biases the pressure cap against the at least one rail to stabilize the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly at an adjustable rail position and in an adjustable body position.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising installing the retention ring in the saddle body.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein

the retention ring is radially elastic, and

the installing includes deforming the retention ring to engage the saddle body.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the spring includes a wave spring.

6. The method of claim 2 , further comprising positioning the rod to be in contact with the pressure cap.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein after the positioning the rod, the spring is disposed between the rod and the rail.

8. A method of constructing an implantable orthopedic assembly comprising an occipital plate, at least one rail rigidly coupled to and extending laterally from the occipital plate, and at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly enclosing a portion of the at least one rail, the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly adapted for securing a received portion of a stabilizing rod, the method comprising:

positioning a pressure cap of the repositionable rod attachment assembly within a receptacle of a saddle body of the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly;

positioning a surface of the at least one rail against a surface of a slide body of the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly;

positioning a spring between the pressure cap and the saddle body of the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly, wherein the spring biases the pressure cap against the at least one rail to stabilize the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly at an adjustable rail position and in an adjustable body position;

uniting the saddle body with the slide body, wherein the at least one rail contacts the pressure cap; and

securing the slide body to the saddle body with a retention ring.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the spring includes a wave spring.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the spring is disposed between the rod and the rail.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising installing the retention ring in the slide body, the retention ring being distinct from the slide body and the saddle body.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising installing the retention ring in the saddle body.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein

the retention ring is radially elastic, and

the installing the retention ring includes deforming the retention ring to engage the saddle body.

14. An implantable orthopedic assembly, comprising:

an occipital plate;

at least one rail rigidly coupled to and extending laterally from the occipital plate;

at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly enclosing a portion of the at least one rail, the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly configured to secure a received portion of a stabilizing rod, the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly including:

a saddle body,

a slide body having a surface configured to contact a surface of the at least one rail,

a pressure cap disposed within a receptacle of the saddle body, the pressure cap having a surface configured to contact the at least one rail, and

at least one of:

a spring disposed between the pressure cap and the saddle body, the spring being configured to bias the pressure cap against the at least one rail to stabilize the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly at an adjustable rail position and in an adjustable body position, and

a retention ring disposed in the slide body and configured to secure the slide body to the saddle body, the retention ring being distinct from the slide body and the saddle body.

15. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly includes the spring.

16. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein the spring includes a wave spring.

17. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein the rod is in contact with the pressure cap.

18. The assembly of claim 17 , wherein the spring is disposed between the rod and the rail.

19. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly includes the retention ring.

20. The assembly of claim 19 , wherein the retention ring is disposed in the saddle body.

21. The assembly of claim 20 , wherein the retention ring is radially elastic and configured to deform for insertion in the saddle body.

22. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the at least one repositionable rod attachment assembly includes the spring and the retention ring.
