Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for managing an aggregated self-organizing network (A-SON). In such, a plurality of small cells is grouped into clusters using available topology information. In one implementation, a subset of clusters is assigned to groups of a first type, such that the clusters within a group of the first type have minimal RF connectivity. For example, scanning or updating of RF parameters may then be coordinated such that adjacent clusters do not scan or update simultaneously but clusters within groups of the first type do have at least partially overlapping scans or updates. Similarly, subsets of clusters may be assigned to first and second groups of a second type, such that the clusters within a first group of the second type have sufficient coverage to provide RF connectivity to clusters within the second group, if the second group encounters a service interruption. Other benefits are also described.

Claims (25)

1. A method of managing an aggregated self-organizing network (A-SON), comprising:

grouping a plurality of small cells into clusters using available topology information;

assigning a subset of clusters to groups of a first type, such that clusters within a group of the first type have minimal radio frequency (RF) connectivity;

coordinating scanning or updating of RF parameters such that adjacent clusters do not scan or update simultaneously but clusters within the groups of the first type do have at least partially overlapping scans or updates;

at a small cell, detecting a change in a parameter in an overlay macro cell of one of the clusters within the group of the first type;

determining if any other small cells in the A-SON have the overlay macro cell in their topology; and

for other small cells that have the overlay macro cell in their topology, updating small cell parameters with at least the changed parameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the grouping the plurality of small cells into the clusters includes performing a radio environment measurements scan to obtain data including signal strength, bandwidth, and either primary scrambling code (PSC) cell identity or physical cell identifier (PCI).

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, employing an automatic neighbor relations function to identify and collect data about neighboring cells to construct a data file corresponding to a neighbor relation table, whereby cell handovers may be facilitated in a more rapid fashion.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coordinating includes using a conflict graph.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting a change in a parameter in a cell of one of the clusters within the group of the first type, and propagating the changed parameter to neighboring cells within the one cluster and to neighbor cells in different clusters.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the updating the small cell parameters includes updating topology information of the small cell.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining if the updating of the small cell parameters adversely impacts system optimization for a given small cell, and if so, then suppressing the updating.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing a system-wide configuration change, including performing the system-wide configuration change sequentially, wherein the system-wide configuration change is performed on one SON group cluster of the first type at a time.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein, following the grouping, the method further comprises:

receiving a join request from a requesting unit, wherein the requesting unit comprises a radio node (RN) and/or a radio access network (RAN);

authenticating, with a cluster manager included in a gateway, the requesting unit that sends the join request; and

assigning the requesting unit to a cluster.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising using a distributed SON (D-SON) module for provisioning RNs assigned to the cluster in accordance with self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing (SON) functionality.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising, coordinating, with an aggregated SON (A-SON) module, activity performed by the D-SON module.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising assigning, with the cluster manager operating in coordination with the A-SON module, a newly added RN to one of a plurality of RANs.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein coordinating the activity performed by the D-SON module includes determining that two or more D-SON modules are capable of conducting SON functionality simultaneously with one another.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the topology information includes at least one of: global positioning system (GPS) coordinates, physical address, Internet Protocol (IP) address, and RF topology, and wherein the topology information is determined through Radio Environment Monitoring (REM).

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the minimal RF connectivity corresponds to a situation such that a user equipment (UE) at an edge of one radio node cannot detect a second radio node.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein a maximum path 15 , at which downlink channels are reliably detected is denoted by D_max, and wherein the minimal RF connectivity corresponds to D_max+20 dB.
