Abstract

Selectively lockable holding arrangements for a surgical access assembly are disclosed. One holding arrangement includes a body portion, an engagement barrel and a retaining member configured as a hook at a distal end of the body portion. The engagement barrel is position on a proximal end of the body portion and is configured to be selectively rotated about the body portion when operatively connected to a surgical holding arrangement. A rotation brake is mounted on the body section. The rotation brake is selectively operable to lock the engagement barrel against rotation.

Claims (31)

1. A selectively lockable holding assembly for a surgical access assembly, comprising:

a body portion;

an engagement barrel rotatably disposed around the body portion;

a retaining member configured as a hook at a distal end of the body portion;

wherein the engagement barrel is positioned on a proximal end of the body portion; and

a rotation brake mounted around the body portion so as to be rotationally fixed with respect to the body portion, the rotation brake further including:

a collar member and an insertion member that is selectively received within a channel portion of the collar member;

a selectively compressible insert disposed within the channel portion of the collar member;

wherein the selectively compressible insert includes a channel centrally disposed therethrough and top and bottom portions of the selectively compressible insert are configured as cones;

wherein the rotation brake is selectively operable to lock the engagement barrel against rotation with respect to the body portion.

2. The holding assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rotation brake further comprises a sleeve element disposed within a brake housing and a selectively turnable brake lever.

3. The holding assembly of claim 2 , wherein the sleeve element is positioned over a ferrule that is fixedly secured to the body portion and a portion of the engagement barrel that is disposed adjacent the engagement barrel.

4. The holding assembly of claim 3 , further comprising a brake guard that extends outwardly from an outer surface of the brake housing to form a clearance in which the brake lever is disposed.

5. The holding assembly of claim 4 , wherein the brake lever is defined by a main body section and opposing finger tabs, wherein sloped members are disposed on a top surface of the main body section, with a groove disposed therebetween.

6. The holding assembly of claim 5 , further comprising a biasing member connected to the brake lever and a stopper, wherein actuation of the brake lever compresses the biasing member to force a stopper into frictional engagement against the sleeve element to simultaneously engage the ferrule and the engagement barrel, thereby locking the engagement barrel against rotation with respect to the body portion.

7. The holding assembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member further includes a treated section that is configured to reduce glare.

8. A selectively lockable holding assembly for a surgical access assembly, comprising:

a body portion;

an engagement barrel rotatably disposed around the body portion;

a retaining member configured as a hook at a distal end of the body portion;

wherein the engagement barrel is positioned on a proximal end of the body portion; and

a rotation brake mounted around the body portion so as to be rotationally fixed with respect to the body portion, the rotation brake further including:

a collar member and an insertion member that is selectively received within a channel portion of the collar member;

an insert member that includes an engagement section receivable within the channel portion;

wherein the channel portion of the collar member includes a collar connection arrangement and wherein the engagement section of the insert member includes an insert connection arrangement that is complementary to the collar connection arrangement, and

wherein the collar connection arrangement and the insert connection arrangement are complementary threaded connection arrangements;

wherein the rotation brake is selectively operable to lock the engagement barrel against rotation with respect to the body portion.

9. The holding assembly of claim 8 , wherein the collar member further comprises a fixing portion that is fixedly connected to a ferrule that is fixedly connected to the body portion, distal to the engagement barrel.

10. The holding assembly of claim 9 , wherein the insert member is slidably connected to the engagement barrel, such that the insert member may be selectively slid toward the collar member to dispose the engagement section of the insert member and into the channel portion of the collar member to compress the selectively compressible insert around the engagement barrel, thereby locking the engagement barrel against rotational movement with respect to the body portion.

11. The holding assembly of claim 8 , wherein the insert member is fixedly connected to the body portion, distal to a ferrule which is also fixedly connected to the body portion, distal to the engagement barrel.

12. The holding assembly of claim 11 , wherein the collar member is slidably connected to the engagement barrel, such that the collar member may be selectively slid toward the insert member to dispose the engagement section of the insert member and into the channel portion of the collar member to compress the selectively compressible insert around both the ferrule and the engagement barrel, thereby locking the engagement barrel against rotational movement with respect to the body portion.
