Abstract

An apparatus for transferring energy using onboard power electronics with high-frequency transformer isolation includes a power electronic drive circuit comprises a dc bus and a first energy storage device coupled to the dc bus. A first bi-directional dc-to-ac voltage inverter is coupled to the first energy storage device and to the dc bus, and a first electromechanical device coupled to the first bi-directional dc-to-ac voltage inverter. A charging system coupled to the dc bus via a charge bus comprises a receptacle configured to mate with a connector coupled to a voltage source external to the power electronic drive circuit and an isolation transformer configured to electrically isolate the charge bus from the receptacle. A controller configured to cause the charging system to supply a charging voltage to the dc bus based on a voltage received from the voltage source external to the power electronic drive circuit.

Claims (44)

1. A vehicle comprising:

an energy storage device coupled to a DC bus;

an inverter coupled to the DC bus;

an electromechanical device coupled to the inverter;

a charging system coupled to the DC bus and the electromechanical device, the charging system comprising:

a receptacle configured to mate with an external voltage source; and

an isolation DC/DC converter coupled to the receptacle and at least one winding of the electromechanical device; and

a controller configured to cause the charging system to:

operate the isolation DC/DC converter to buck or boost a DC voltage derived from the external voltage source; and

cause the bucked or boosted DC voltage to be supplied to the DC bus through the electromechanical device and inverter to charge the energy storage device.

2. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a buck/boost converter coupled to the energy storage device.

3. The vehicle of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to operate the buck/boost converter to further buck or boost the bucked or boosted DC voltage to charge the energy storage device.

4. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electromechanical device is a traction motor.

5. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electromechanical device is an alternator.

6. The vehicle of claim 5 , wherein the alternator is coupled to an engine.

7. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the isolation DC/DC converter comprises an isolation transformer, a pair of transistors, a resonance capacitor, and a full-wave rectifier.

8. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the voltage source is an AC voltage source.

9. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a second energy storage device coupled to the DC bus.

10. A method for charging a vehicle comprising:

coupling an energy storage device to a DC bus;

coupling an inverter to the DC bus;

coupling an electromechanical device to the inverter;

coupling a charging system to the DC bus and the electromechanical device, the charging system comprising:

a receptacle configured to mate with an external voltage source; and

an isolation DC/DC converter coupled to the receptacle and at least one winding of the electromechanical device; and

configuring a controller to cause the charging system to:

operate the isolation DC/DC converter to buck or boost a DC voltage derived from the external voltage source; and

cause the bucked or boosted DC voltage to be supplied to the DC bus through the electromechanical device and inverter to charge the energy storage device.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising coupling a buck/boost converter to the energy storage device.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising configuring the controller to operate the buck/boost converter to further buck or boost the bucked or boosted DC voltage to charge the energy storage device.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a DC bus;

an energy storage device coupled to the DC bus;

an inverter coupled to the DC bus;

a traction motor coupled to the inverter;

a charging system coupled to the DC bus and the traction motor, the charging system comprising:

a receptacle configured to mate with an external voltage source; and

an isolation DC/DC converter coupled to the receptacle and at least one winding of the traction motor; and

a controller configured to cause the charging system to:

operate the isolation DC/DC converter to buck or boost a DC voltage derived from the external voltage source; and

cause the bucked or boosted DC voltage to be supplied to the DC bus through the traction motor and inverter to charge the energy storage device.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a buck/boost converter coupled to the energy storage device.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the controller is further configured to operate the buck/boost converter to further buck or boost the bucked or boosted DC voltage to charge the energy storage device.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a second energy storage device coupled to the DC bus.
