Abstract

Devices and methods for removing an obstruction from a blood vessel are described. The devices are deployed in a collapsed condition and are then expanded within the body. The devices are then manipulated to engage and remove the obstruction.

Claims (13)

1. A system for removing an obstruction from a blood vessel, comprising:

a delivery sheath having an open distal end and delivery sheath lumen in communication with the open distal end;

an obstruction engaging member comprising an elongate proximal portion slidably disposed within the delivery sheath lumen, and a distal obstruction engaging portion configured to expand into a helically wound formation having a circumference that tapers downward in a distal direction; and

a capture element operatively coupled with, and moveable relative to, the obstruction engaging member, the capture element comprising an elongate proximal portion slidably disposed within the delivery sheath lumen, and an expandable distal capture portion, the distal capture portion comprising a plurality of longitudinally disposed struts arranged circumferentially that, when the distal obstruction capture portion is expanded, form an open axially-facing distal end sized to receive the expanded obstruction engaging portion of the expanded obstruction engaging member, and wherein the system further comprises a loop on a distal edge of the distal capture portion, the loop having integrally formed hinges.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the obstruction engaging member is arranged in a co-axial relationship with the proximal portion of the capture element within the delivery sheath lumen.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the obstruction engaging member is arranged in a side-by-side relationship with the proximal portion of the capture element within the delivery sheath lumen.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein when the distal capture portion is expanded, the longitudinally oriented struts form a fluted configuration that increases in diameter in a distal direction.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein when the distal capture portion is expanded, the longitudinally oriented struts are straight.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein when the distal capture portion is expanded, the longitudinally oriented struts are bowed.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein when the distal capture portion is expanded, the longitudinally oriented struts form a tubular configuration having a substantially uniform diameter.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a delivery catheter slidably positioned in the delivery sheath lumen, wherein the respective obstruction engaging member and capture element are slidably positioned in a lumen of the delivery catheter, the delivery catheter having an open distal end, wherein the respective distal obstruction engaging portion of the obstruction engaging member and the distal capture portion of the capture element may each be selectively and independently extended out of and/or retracted into the open distal end of the delivery catheter.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the integrally formed hinges are V-shaped.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the circumference of the helically wound formation tapers downward in the distal direction along the entire length of the helically wound formation.
