Abstract

A method and system for a scalable multi-sense user experience are disclosed. A three-dimensional (“3-D”) display is disposed behind a slit plane comprising slits and ultrasonic transducers. Light from the 3-D display passes through the slits in the slit plane to generate a 3-D image. The ultrasonic transducers on the front of the slit plane, i.e., opposite the side where the 3-D display is disposed, generate directed acoustic field and/or a formed tactile field. Because the generating components for all three senses, i.e., visual, audio, and tactile, are coplanar, units may be tiled and thereby scaled to generate larger multi-sense experiences.

Claims (40)

1. A device for generating a multisensory user experience comprising:

a display apparatus configured to provide holographic illumination;

a plurality of mechanical energy sources;

a light-transmission layer configured to receive holographic illumination from the display apparatus and transmit holographic illumination through at least a portion of the light-transmission layer;

a control system in communication with the plurality of mechanical energy sources and the display apparatus wherein the control system operates the plurality of mechanical energy sources to project mechanical energy to form a tactile field comprising one or more tactile-field surfaces;

wherein the control system operates the display apparatus to project holographic illumination through the light-transmission layer to form a hologram comprising one or more holographic surfaces, at least one of the one or more holographic surfaces being coincident with at least one of the one or more tactile-field surfaces; and

wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources is coupled with the light-transmission layer such that the mechanical energy and the holographic illumination are projected towards substantially the same direction towards a holographic volume.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources comprises at least one ultrasonic transducer.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein one or more mechanical energy sources of the plurality of mechanical energy sources are transparent.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the light-transmission layer comprises one or more transmissive areas configured to pass holographic illumination projected by the display apparatus and one or more non-transmissive areas configured to block holographic illumination.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources are disposed on the one or more non-transmissive areas.

6. The device of claim 4 , wherein the light-transmission layer is disposed between the display apparatus and an array of optical elements wherein the optical elements are aligned with the one or more transmissive areas so holographic illumination passes through the optical elements.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the mechanical energy sources are aligned with the one or more non-transmissive areas and interspersed with the optical elements.

8. The device of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources are formed of a transparent membrane and wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources comprises an array of optical elements aligned with the one or more transmissive areas so holographic illumination passes through the optical elements.

9. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an array of optical elements disposed between the display apparatus and the light-transmission layer.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein light-transmission layer is disposed between the display apparatus and the plurality of mechanical energy sources.

11. A device for generating a multisensory user experience comprising:

a display apparatus configured to project holographic illumination;

a plurality of mechanical energy sources;

a light-transmission layer configured to receive holographic illumination from the display apparatus and transmit holographic illumination through at least a portion of the light-transmission layer;

a control system in communication with the plurality of mechanical energy sources and the display apparatus wherein the control system operates the plurality of mechanical energy sources to project a directed acoustic field;

wherein the control system operates the display apparatus to project holographic illumination through the light-transmission layer to form a hologram comprising one or more holographic surfaces such that the directed acoustic field is projected through the one or more holographic surfaces so it appears that the directed acoustic field is originated from the hologram; and

wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources is coupled with the light-transmission layer such that the acoustic field energy and the holographic illumination are projected towards substantially the same direction towards a holographic volume.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources comprises at least one ultrasonic transducer.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the light-transmission layer comprises one or more transmissive areas configured to pass holographic illumination projected by the display apparatus and one or more non-transmissive areas configured to block holographic illumination.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources are disposed on the one or more non-transmissive areas.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein the light-transmission layer is disposed between the display apparatus and an array of optical elements wherein the optical elements are aligned with the one or more transmissive areas so holographic illumination passes through the optical elements.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the wherein the mechanical energy sources are aligned with the one or more non-transmissive areas and interspersed with the optical elements.

17. The device of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources are formed of a transparent membrane and wherein the plurality of mechanical energy sources comprises an array of optical elements aligned with the one or more transmissive areas so holographic illumination passes through the elements.

18. The device of claim 11 , wherein one or more mechanical energy sources of the plurality of mechanical energy sources are transparent.

19. The device of claim 11 , further comprising an array of optical elements disposed between the display apparatus and the light-transmission layer.
