Abstract

The disclosure provides for a bone implant for replacing at least a portion of a bone of a patient. The bone implant includes a support structure being a non-antigenic porous natural collagen matrix configured to receive cells, the support structure formed by removing tissue and cells from a bone obtained from a body leaving only the non-antigenic collagen matrix, the support structure having a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the bone to be replaced, the support structure having a plurality of passages through which blood may flow. The bone implant also includes viable multipotent stem cells harvested from the patient and deposited into the pores of the matrix of the support structure, wherein the support structure is configured for attachment of different types of viable cells.

Claims (47)

1 . A bone implant for replacing at least a portion of a bone of a patient, the bone implant comprising:

a support structure being a non-antigenic porous natural collagen matrix configured to receive cells, the support structure formed by removing tissue and cells from a bone obtained from a body leaving only the non-antigenic collagen matrix, the support structure having a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the bone to be replaced, the support structure having a plurality of passages through which blood may flow; and

viable multipotent stem cells harvested from the patient and deposited into the pores of the matrix of the support structure, wherein the support structure is configured for attachment of different types of viable cells.

2 . The implant according to claim 1 , wherein more than one type of viable cell may be positioned on the support structure.

3 . The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the viable cells include a mix of different cell lines.

4 . The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the viable cells include cells that are at least one of fibroblast cells, osteochondral cells, osteoblast cells, osteoclast cells, mesodermal cells, and myoblast cells.

5 . The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the viable cells are harvested and cultured prior to placement on the support structure.

6 . The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the cells deposited on the support structure are exposed to environmental conditions including one or more of static mechanical forces, dynamic mechanical forces, chemical stimuli, and electromagnetic stimuli.

7 . The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the body from which the bone used to form the support structure is one of the patient's own body, the body of another living human, a human cadaver, a living animal, or a dead animal.

8 . A method of creating a bone implant, which comprises:

harvesting a bone from a body;

removing tissue and cells from the bone leaving only the porous natural non-antigenic collagen matrix as a support structure;

forming the support structure into a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the desired bone implant;

harvesting viable multipotent stem cells from a patient;

depositing the viable multipotent stem cells into the pores of the matrix of the support structure to form a replacement bone implant, the viable cells being of the nature that perform the function of the bone to be replaced; and

placing the bone implant into the patient.

9 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein more than one type of viable cell may be positioned on the support structure.

10 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the viable cells include a mix of different cell lines.

11 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the viable cells are at least one of fibroblast cells, osteochondral cells, osteoblast cells, osteoclast cells, mesodermal cells, and myoblast cells.

12 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the viable cells are harvested and cultured prior to placement on the support structure.

13 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the cells deposited on the support structure are exposed to environmental conditions including one or more of static mechanical forces, dynamic mechanical forces, chemical stimuli, and electromagnetic stimuli.

14 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the body from which the bone used to form the support structure is one of the patient's own body, the body of another living human, a human cadaver, a living animal, or a dead animal.

15 . A bone implant for replacing at least a portion of a bone of a patient, the bone implant comprising:

a support structure being a non-antigenic porous synthetic matrix configured to receive cells, the support structure based on a pattern, formed from at least one of polymer strands and filaments, the support structure having a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the bone to be replaced, the support structure having a plurality of passages through which blood may flow; and

viable multipotent stem cells harvested from the patient and deposited into the pores of the matrix of the support structure, wherein the support structure is configured for attachment of different types of viable cells.

16 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein more than one type of viable cell may be positioned on the support structure.

17 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the viable cells include a mix of different cell lines.

18 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the viable cells include cells that are at least one of fibroblast cells, osteochondral cells, osteoblast cells, osteoclast cells, mesodermal cells, and myoblast cells.

19 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the viable cells are harvested and cultured prior to placement on the support structure.

20 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the cells deposited on the support structure are exposed to environmental conditions including one or more of static mechanical forces, dynamic mechanical forces, chemical stimuli, and electromagnetic stimuli.

21 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the pattern from which the support structure is based is one of the patient's own body, the body of another living human, a human cadaver, a living animal, or a dead animal.

22 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein at least one of the polymer strands and filaments comprising the support structure are biodegradable.

23 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein at least one of the polymer strands and filaments comprising the support structure are non-biodegradable.

24 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein at least one of the polymer strands and filaments comprising the support structure are synthetic collagen.

25 . The implant according to claim 15 , wherein at least one of the polymer strands and filaments comprising the support structure are natural collagen.

26 . An implant for replacing at least a portion of an organ of a patient, the implant comprising:

a support structure being a non-antigenic porous natural collagen matrix configured to receive cells, the support structure formed by removing tissue and cells from an organ obtained from a body leaving only the non-antigenic collagen matrix, the support structure having a configuration corresponding to the configuration of the organ to be replaced, the support structure having a plurality of passages through which blood may flow; and
