Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for evaluating human eye tracking. One method includes receiving data representing the location of and/or information tracked by an individual's eye or eyes before, during, or after the individual performs a task; identifying a temporal phase or a biomechanical phase of the task performed by the individual; identifying a visual cue in the identified temporal phase or biomechanical phase; and scoring the tracking of the individual's eye or eyes by comparing the data to the visual cue.

Claims (62)

1. A method comprising:

generating an electronic user interface displaying one or more visual cues of where an individual should look during a task conducted by the individual using the user interface;

determining a target range associated with each of the one or more visual cues displayed on the user interface, each target range defining a viewing area around the one or more visual cues;

prompting the individual to respond to the one or more visual cues displayed using the user interface;

receiving data of the individual's response to the one or more visual cues, including the individual's identification of the one or more visual cues and data representing a location where the individual's eye or eyes are looking relative to the target range defining the viewing area around each of the one or more visual cues, before, during, or after the task conducted using the user interface;

identifying one or more saccades and one or more smooth pursuit eye movements from the received data, where the smooth pursuit eye movements are distinguished from the one or more identified saccades, or where the smooth pursuit eye movements take into account saccadic suppression;

evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity based on the identified smooth pursuit eye movements;

evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time, using both the individual's identification of the one or more visual cues and the identified smooth pursuit eye movements;

quantifying the individual's response to the one or more visual cues based on the evaluation of the individual's visual tracking and acuity and the evaluation of the individual's vision performance, the evaluation of the individual's visual tracking and acuity being different from the evaluation of the individual's vision performance; and generating an electronic display including indicia representing one or more quantified results of the evaluation of the individual's response to the one or more visual cues.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity, including smooth pursuit eye movement, and visual stability and/or acuity, comprises:

evaluating an error measure used for continuous skill of following an object over the user interface to determine an amount of error between a performance curve and a criterion performance curve for a specific amount of time.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein evaluating the individual's visual pursuit tracking and acuity, further comprises:

identifying one or more fixations from the received data and excluding the one or more fixations from evaluation of the individual's smooth pursuit eye movement.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity further comprises:

evaluating a length of time that an individual's fixation or gaze location remains stable on one or more of the visual cues displayed on the electronic user interface;

determining the individual's ability to identify stationary detail among varying contrast conditions of the one or more visual cues; and

evaluating a combination of accuracy in recognition and one or more of time, angular velocities, and various contrast conditions.

The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time comprises: evaluating an interval of time between an onset of one of the one or more visual cues displayed on the electronic user interface, and an initiation of a response of the individual.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time comprises: evaluating a reaction time of the individual to more than one signal, each signal having a specified response.

The method of claim 6 , wherein evaluating a reaction time of the individual to more than one signal, each signal having a specified response, comprises: evaluating a choice reaction time between initiation of the individual's response, including premotor and motor components, to a correct response to a stimuli.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time comprises: evaluating a reaction time for response to stimuli having more than one signal, but only one correct response.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data is one or more of: image data of the individual's eye or eyes, coordinate data of the location of the individual's eye or eyes, and coordinate data of a location on which the individual's eye or eyes were looking; and

wherein the data is received, either locally or over a network, from a wearable eye tracker, networked camera, or remote eye tracker device configured to obtain the data by imaging or tracking the individual's eye or eyes.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying movement of the identified visual cue over the electronic user interface, the identified movement including a set of coordinates of the visual cue at each of a plurality of points in time; and

determining the target range for each of the sets of coordinates of the visual cue.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining one or more visual characteristics associated with the one or more visual cues displayed on the electronic user interface; and

generating a score of the individual's response to the visual cue by scoring the one or more visual characteristics associated with the visual cue relative to the individual's identification of the visual cue.

12. A system comprising:

a data storage device storing instructions for evaluating human eye movement;

a processor configured to execute the instructions to perform a method including:

generating an electronic user interface displaying one or more visual cues of where an individual should look during a task conducted by the individual using the user interface;

determining a target range associated with each of the one or more visual cues displayed on the user interface, each target range defining a viewing area around the one or more visual cues;

prompting the individual to respond to the one or more visual cues displayed using the user interface;

receiving data of the individual's response to the one or more visual cues, including the individual's identification of the one or more visual cues and data representing a location where the individual's eye or eyes are looking relative to the target range defining the viewing area around each of the one or more visual cues, before, during, or after the task conducted using the user interface;

identifying one or more saccades and one or more smooth pursuit eye movements from the received data, where the smooth pursuit eye movements are distinguished from the one or more identified saccades, or where the smooth pursuit eye movements take into account saccadic suppression;

evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity based on the identified smooth pursuit eye movements;

evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time, using both the individual's identification of the one or more visual cues and the identified smooth pursuit eye movements;

quantifying the individual's response to the one or more visual cues based on the evaluation of the individual's visual tracking and acuity and the evaluation of the individual's vision performance, the evaluation of the individual's visual tracking and acuity being different from the evaluation of the individual's vision performance; and

generating an electronic display including indicia representing one or more quantified results of the evaluation of the individual's response to the one or more visual cues.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity, including smooth pursuit eye movement, and visual stability and/or acuity, comprises:

evaluating an error measure used for continuous skill of following an object over the user interface to determine an amount of error between a performance curve and a criterion performance curve for a specific amount of time.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity, further comprises:

identifying one or more fixations from the received data and excluding the one or more fixations from evaluation of the individual's smooth pursuit eye movement.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity further comprises:

evaluating a length of time that an individual's fixation or gaze location remains stable on one or more of the visual cues displayed on the electronic user interface;

determining the individual's ability to identify stationary detail among varying contrast conditions of the one or more visual cues; and

evaluating a combination of accuracy in recognition and one or more of time, angular velocities, and various contrast conditions.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time comprises: evaluating an interval of time between an onset of one of the one or more visual cues, and an initiation of a response of the individual.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time comprises: evaluating a reaction time of the individual to more than one signal, each signal having a specified response.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time comprises: evaluating a reaction time for response to stimuli having more than one signal, but only one correct response.

19. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method comprising:

generating an electronic user interface displaying one or more visual cues of where an individual should look during a task conducted by the individual using the user interface;

determining a target range associated with each of the one or more visual cues displayed on the user interface, each target range defining a viewing area around the one or more visual cues;

prompting the individual to respond to the one or more visual cues displayed using the user interface;

receiving data of the individual's response to the one or more visual cues, including the individual's identification of the one or more visual cues and data representing a location where the individual's eye or eyes are looking relative to the target range defining the viewing area around each of the one or more visual cues, before, during, or after the task conducted using the user interface;

identifying one or more saccades and one or more smooth pursuit eye movements from the received data, where the smooth pursuit eye movements are distinguished from the one or more identified saccades, or where the smooth pursuit eye movements take into account saccadic suppression;

evaluating the individual's visual tracking and acuity based on the identified smooth pursuit eye movements;

evaluating the individual's vision performance, including reaction time, choice reaction time, and/or discrimination reaction time, using both the individual's identification of the one or more visual cues and the identified smooth pursuit eye movements;

quantifying the individual's response to the one or more visual cues based on the evaluation of the individual's visual tracking and acuity and the evaluation of the individual's vision performance, the evaluation of the individual's visual tracking and acuity being different from the evaluation of the individual's vision performance; and

generating an electronic display including indicia representing one or more quantified results of the evaluation of the individual's response to the one or more visual cues.
