Abstract

An apparatus for reducing the temperature of a liquid product in a processing line includes a polymer member having a passageway formed therein for receiving a liquid product in the passageway; an inlet and an outlet each in fluid communication with a corresponding opposed end of the passageway; a plurality of delivery channels formed in the polymer member, each one of the plurality of delivery channels having an opening in fluid communication with a different location of the passageway and constructed to provide a chilling medium into the passageway; and a support member for the polymer member, the support member constructed to mount the polymer member in the processing line. A related method is also provided.

Claims (13)

1. An apparatus for reducing the temperature of a liquid food product in a processing line, comprising:

a polymer member having a passageway formed therein for receiving the liquid food product in the passageway, the polymer member comprising a slug of material selected from the group consisting of TEFLON®, ultra high molecular weight (UHMW) plastic, and other plastic material;

an inlet and an outlet each in fluid communication with a corresponding opposed end of the passageway;

a plurality of delivery channels formed in the polymer member, each one of the plurality of delivery channels having an aperture in fluid communication with a different location of the passageway, respective apertures of the plurality of delivery channels comprising a helical pattern along the passageway and constructed to introduce a chilling medium in the helical pattern into the liquid food product in the passageway, and wherein each of the plurality of delivery channels are disposed at an angle less than 90° with respect to a longitudinal axis of the passageway, and wherein the angle of each of the plurality of delivery channels approaches a direction of flow of the chilling medium in the passageway; and

a support member for the polymer member, the support member constructed to mount said polymer member in the processing line.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the slug has a circular cross-section.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the passageway comprises a continuous uniform diameter.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a nozzle in fluid communication with an opening of each of the plurality of delivery channels opposite to the aperture.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the nozzle is in fluid communication with a plurality of openings of the delivery channels.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the support member comprises a frame.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the frame is constructed from metallic components.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the frame is releasably engageable to the polymer member.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the passageway increases from said inlet to said outlet.
