Abstract

A system and method for low-power digital signal processing, for example, comprising adjusting a digital representation of an input signal.

Claims (40)

1. A low-power digital processing system comprising:

at least one module that operates to, at least:

analyze an input signal represented by a first digital representation;

based at least in part on the analysis of the input signal and on at least one adaptable criterion, determine whether to adjust a digital representation of a level of the input signal to a second digital representation different from the first digital representation prior to performing a next digital signal processing function on the input signal; and

if it is determined to adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal, then at least:

adjust the digital representation of a level of the input signal to the second digital representation; and

perform the next digital signal processing function on the second digital representation of the input signal to form an output signal.

2. The low-power digital processing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adaptable criterion comprises an adaptable threshold.

3. The low-power digital processing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one module is operable to, if it is determined to adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal, then adjust a manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed.

4. The low-power digital processing system of claim 3 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to generate a signal indicative of an adjustment to the digital representation.

5. The low-power digital processing system of claim 3 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to specify a digital signal processing parameter for the next digital signal processing function.

6. A low-power digital processing system comprising:

at least one module operable to, at least:

analyze an input signal represented by a first digital representation;

determine a type of information being communicated by the input signal;

based at least in part on the analysis of the input signal and on the determined type of information being communicated by the input signal, determine whether to adjust a digital representation of a level of the input signal to a second digital representation different from the first digital representation prior to performing a next digital signal processing function on the input signal; and

if it is determined to adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal, then at least:

adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal to the second digital representation; and

perform the next digital signal processing function on the second digital representation of the input signal to form an output signal.

7. The low-power digital processing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one module is operable to determine the type of information being communicated by the input signal by, at least in part, operating to determine whether the input signal is communicating audio information.

8. The low-power digital processing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one module is operable to determine the type of information being communicated by the input signal by, at least in part, operating to determine whether the input signal is communicating still image information.

9. The low-power digital processing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one module is operable to determine the type of information being communicated by the input signal by, at least in part, operating to determine whether the input signal is communicating moving picture information.

10. The low-power digital processing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one module is operable to, if it is determined to adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal, then adjust a manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed.

11. The low-power digital processing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to generate a signal indicative of an adjustment to the digital representation.

12. The low-power digital processing system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to specify a digital signal processing parameter for the next digital signal processing function.

13. The low-power digital processing system of claim 12 , wherein the processing parameter comprises a filter tap coefficient.

14. A low-power digital processing system comprising:

at least one module operable to, at least:

analyze an input signal represented by a first digital representation;

based at least in part on the analysis of the input signal, determine whether to adjust a digital representation of a level of the input signal to a second digital representation different from the first digital representation prior to performing a next digital signal processing function on the input signal; and

if it is determined to adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal, then at least:

adjust the digital representation of the level of the input signal to the second digital representation;

adjust a manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed; and

perform the next digital signal processing function on the second digital representation of the input signal to form an output signal.

15. The low-power digital processing system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to generate a signal indicative of an adjustment to the digital representation.

16. The low-power digital processing system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to specify a digital signal processing parameter for the next digital signal processing function.

17. The low-power digital processing system of claim 16 , wherein the processing parameter comprises an arithmetic factor.

18. The low-power digital processing system of claim 16 , wherein the processing parameter comprises a filter tap coefficient.

19. The low-power digital processing system of claim 16 , wherein the processing parameter comprises an audio signal processing setting.

20. The low-power digital processing system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one module is operable to adjust the manner in which the next digital signal processing function is performed by, at least in part, operating to generate a signal indicative of a memory address.
