Abstract

Temperature-insensitive calcium phosphate cements and methods of using the same are provided. Aspects of the cements include a dry component having fine and coarse calcium phosphate particulate reactants and a setting fluid which includes a cellulose. The dry component and setting fluid may be combined over a broad temperature range to produce a flowable composition. The resultant flowable composition finds use in a variety of different applications, including the repair of hard tissue defects, e.g., bone defects such as fractures.

Claims (26)

1. A flowable composition produced by a method comprising combining at a temperature ranging from 15 to 25° C.:

(a) a dry reactant component comprising:

(i) a first particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 8 μm or less; and

(ii) a second particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 10 μm or greater; and

(b) a setting fluid consisting of water and an amount of carboxymethylcellulose ranging from about 2 up to about 3 wt %;

wherein the dry reactant component and the setting fluid are combined in a ratio sufficient to produce the flowable composition and wherein the flowable composition sets into a calcium phosphate containing product.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second particulate calcium phosphate reactants are tricalcium phosphate.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second particulate calcium phosphate reactant comprises tricalcium phosphate particles that range in size from 250 μm and comprise sodium in an amount ranging from 1500 to 2500 ppm.

4. A method of repairing a hard tissue defect, the method comprising:

(a) combining at a temperature ranging from 15 to 25° C.:

a dry reactant component comprising:

(i) a first particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 8 μm or less; and

(ii) a second particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 10 μm or greater; and

a setting fluid consisting of water and an amount of carboxymethylcellulose ranging from about 2 up to about 3 wt %;

wherein the dry reactant component and the setting fluid are combined in a ratio sufficient to produce a flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product; and

(b) applying the flowable composition to the defect in a manner sufficient to repair the hard tissue defect.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the first and second particulate calcium phosphate reactants are tricalcium phosphate.

6. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the second particulate calcium phosphate reactant comprises tricalcium phosphate particles that range in size from 250 μm and comprise sodium in an amount ranging from 1500 to 2500 ppm.

7. A kit comprising:

(a) a dry reactant component comprising:

(i) a first particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 8 μm or less; and

(ii) a second particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 10 μm or greater; and

(b) a setting fluid consisting of water and an amount of carboxymethylcellulose ranging from about 2 up to about 3 wt %;

wherein the dry reactant component and the setting fluid are in a ratio sufficient to, upon mixing, produce a flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product.

8. The kit according to claim 7 , wherein the first and second particulate calcium phosphate reactants are tricalcium phosphate.

9. The kit according to claim 7 , wherein the second particulate calcium phosphate reactant comprises tricalcium phosphate particles that range in size from 250 μm and comprise sodium in an amount ranging from 1500 to 2500 ppm.
