Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to protecting the privacy of a user of a dispatching service for driverless vehicles. For example, a request for a vehicle identifying user information is received. A client computing device may be identified based on the user information. In response to the request, a driverless vehicle may be dispatched to the location of the client device. Signaling information may be generated based on a set of rules including a first rule that the signaling information does not identify, indirectly or directly, the user as well as a second rule that the signaling information does not identify, indirectly or directly, the user information. The location of the client computing device and the signaling information may be sent to the driverless vehicle for display. In addition, the signaling information may also be sent to the client computing device for display.

Claims (35)

1. A method of identifying a vehicle to a passenger prior to picking up the passenger for a trip to a destination, the method comprising:

receiving dispatch instructions to pickup the passenger for the trip, the dispatch instructions identifying a pickup location for the passenger and signal information for the passenger, the signal information identifying a particular color selected by a user during an initial setup of an application used to request to pickup the passenger, the color being associated with account information of the passenger, wherein the particular color cannot be used by another user based on at least one of within a predetermined period of time or within a predetermined geographical area;

maneuvering a vehicle to the pickup location to pickup the passenger; and

prior to the vehicle reaching the pickup location, displaying the particular color on a display of the vehicle in order to identify the vehicle to the passenger prior to picking up the passenger.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular color is displayed based on proximity of the vehicle to the pickup location.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular color is displayed based on proximity of the vehicle to a client computing device associated with the passenger.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal information identifies a pattern of colors associated with the account information of the passenger, and displaying the particular color further includes displaying the pattern of colors.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal information is assigned for multiple trips such that after the trip, the signal information is available for a future trip.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal information is user selected signal information.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is an autonomous vehicle.

8. A method of dispatching a vehicle in order to identify the vehicle to a passenger, the method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, a request to dispatch the vehicle to pickup the passenger for a trip, the request identifying a pickup location;

selecting, by the one or more processors, the vehicle from a plurality of vehicles based on the pickup location;

identifying, by the one or more processors, account information of the passenger, the account information being associated with signal information for the passenger identifying a particular color being selected by a user during an initial setup of an application used to request to pickup the passenger, wherein the particular color cannot be used by another user based on at least one of within a predetermined period of time or within a predetermined geographical area; and

after selecting the vehicle, providing, by the one or more processors, the signal information to a computing device of the vehicle with signal instructions for displaying the particular color prior to picking up the passenger for the trip in order to identify the vehicle to the passenger; and

after selecting the vehicle, sending, by the one or more processors, dispatch instructions to the vehicle to dispatch the vehicle to the location of the passenger.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions to display the particular color based on proximity of the vehicle to the pickup location.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions to display the particular color based on proximity of the vehicle to a client computing device associated with the passenger.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the signal information identifies a pattern of colors associated with the account information of the passenger, and the instructions further comprise instructions for displaying the pattern of colors.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising assigning the signal information for multiple trips such that after the trip, the signal information is available for a future trip.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving user input selecting the signal information prior to providing the signal instructions.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

providing to a client computing device of the passenger the signal information; and

in response to providing the signal information to the client computing device, receiving user input confirming the signal information prior to providing the signal instructions.

15. The method of claim 8 , further comprising assigning the signal information for multiple trips such that after the trip, the signal information is available for a future trip.

16. The method of claim 8 , wherein the vehicle is an autonomous vehicle.

17. A method of identifying a vehicle to a passenger prior to picking up the passenger for a trip to a destination, the method comprising:

sending, by one or more processors of a client computing device, a request for the vehicle to pickup the passenger for the trip;

in response to the request, receiving, by the one or more processors, confirmation that the vehicle has been dispatched and signal information associated with user account information of the passenger, the signal information including a particular color being selected by a user during an initial setup of an application to request to pickup the passenger, wherein the particular color cannot be used by another user based on at least one of within a predetermined period of time or within a predetermined geographical area; and

displaying, on a display of the client computing device, the particular color of the signal information to match to a corresponding color displayed at the dispatched vehicle to identify the dispatched vehicle to the passenger.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising

receiving from one or more dispatching server computing devices configured to dispatch the vehicle the signal information; and

in response to receiving the signal information from the one or more dispatching server computing devices, receiving user confirmation of the particular color.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the signal information further includes a pattern of colors including the particular color, and displaying the particular color includes displaying the pattern of colors.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the vehicle is an autonomous vehicle.
