Abstract

The present invention relates to a razor blade having one or more coatings formed by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process, the formed coatings being uniform, conformal, and dense. The coatings may be on an entire surface of a blade flank, and at least a portion or an entire surface of a blade body. The coatings may be etched. The invention relates to a razor blade having a first coating of a first material and a second coating of a second material where at least one of the first and second coatings is deposited using an ALD process and the second coating is deposited on a top surface of the first coating. The first and second materials may be similar or different. The present invention relates to a razor component having one coating of at least one layer of one or more materials formed using an ALD process.

Claims (20)

1. A razor blade comprising a first coating of a first material and a second coating of a second material, at least one of said first and second coatings deposited using an ALD process wherein said second coating is deposited on a top surface of said first coating.

2. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said second coating partially covers said first coating.

3. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said second coating is deposited using a stencil or a mask.

4. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein at least one portion of said first or said second coating is removed by etching.

5. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said first material comprises a first characteristic and said second material comprises a second characteristic.

6. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said first material comprises a first color and said second material comprises a second color.

7. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said at least one coating covers an entire surface of at least one blade flank and at least a portion of a surface of a blade body of said razor blade.

8. The razor blade of claim 4 wherein said etched coating occurs on said at least one blade flank or on said blade body or on both said blade flank and said blade body.

9. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein a blade tip radius ranges from about 15 nm to about 40 nm.

10. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said at least one coating is conformal, has a substantially uniform thickness, smooth surface morphology and substantially zero porosity.

11. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said at least one coating has a thickness ranging from about 0.1 nm to about 500 nm.

12. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said at least one coating is comprised of a plurality of monolayers of one or more materials.

13. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said first and second materials are the same.

14. The razor blade of claim 1 wherein said razor blade is comprised of steel, Chromium (Cr), Diamond-like Carbon (DLC), Amorphous Diamond, Chromium/Platinum (Cr/Pt), Titanium, Titanium Nitride or Niobium or any combination thereof.

15. A razor component comprising at least one coating of at least one layer of one or more materials formed using an ALD process.

16. The razor component of claim 15 wherein said razor component comprises a cartridge clip or at least a portion thereof, a blade support or at least a portion thereof, a razor blade body or at least a portion thereof, a razor blade flank or at least a portion thereof, a bent blade or at least a portion thereof, a razor handle or at least a portion thereof, or any combination thereof.

17. The razor component of claim 15 wherein one of said at least one coatings is etched.

18. The razor component of claim 15 wherein said at least one coating has a thickness ranging from about 0.1 nm to about 2000 nm.

19. The razor component of claim 15 wherein said at least one coating is conformal, has a substantially uniform thickness, smooth surface morphology and substantially zero porosity.

20. The razor component of claim 15 wherein a first layer of material and a second layer of material have different characteristics.
