Abstract

Circuitry for ultrasound devices is described. A multi-level pulser is described, which can support time-domain and spatial apodization. The multi-level pulser may be controlled through a software-defined waveform generator. In response to the execution of a computer code, the waveform generator may access master segments from a memory, and generate a stream of packets directed to pulsing circuits. The stream of packets may be serialized. A plurality of decoding circuits may modulate the streams of packets to obtain spatial apodization.

Claims (17)

1. A method, comprising:

performing parallel-to-serial conversion followed by serial-to-parallel conversion of control data configured to control transmission of an acoustic ultrasound waveform by an ultrasonic transducer; and

transmitting the control data through a delay mesh network subsequent to performing the parallel-to-serial conversion and prior to performing the serial-to-parallel conversion.

The method of claim 1 , wherein an integrated circuit performs the parallel-to-serial conversion and the serial-to-parallel conversion, the integrated circuit being integrated with an array of ultrasonic transducers, including the ultrasonic transducer, on a complementary metal oxide (CMOS) chip.

3. An apparatus comprising:

a plurality of pulsers;

a plurality of ultrasonic transducers configured to receive a plurality of pulses from at least some of the plurality of pulsers;

transmit circuitry coupled to the plurality of pulsers and configured to provide to a first pulser of the plurality of pulsers a serial stream of control data packets specifying operation of the first pulser to create a plurality of waveform segments of a multi-level waveform;

decoding circuitry configured to perform a serial-to-parallel conversion by receiving the serial stream of the control data packets and transmitting the control data packets to the plurality of pulsers in parallel; and

a delay mesh circuit configured to delay at least one control data packet of the serial stream of control data packets.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the at least one control data packet of the serial stream of control data packets comprises a value representing one reference voltage of a plurality of reference voltages, such that the multi-level waveform can assume any one of the reference voltages.

The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the first pulser comprises a first transistor and a second transistor, and wherein the at least one control data packet of the serial stream of control data packets comprises a value representing a first conductive state associated with the first transistor and a second conductive state associated with the second transistor.

6. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the first pulser comprises a bipolar pulser.

7. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of pulsers and the plurality of ultrasonic transducers are integrated on a silicon substrate.

8. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising decoding circuitry configured to modulate, across the plurality of pulsers, the serial stream of control data packets to obtain spatial apodization.

The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein a first ultrasonic transducer of the plurality of ultrasonic transducers is coupled to the first pulser of the plurality of pulsers and is configured to generate an acoustic ultrasound waveform in response to providing to the first pulser of the plurality of pulsers the serial stream of control data packets.

10. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the transmit circuitry is configured to provide the serial stream of control data packets to achieve temporal apodization.
