Abstract

A surgical stapling instrument is disclosed. The stapling instrument comprises an end effector including a staple cartridge comprising a circular array of staple cavities and staples removably stored in the staple cavities and, in addition, an anvil configured to deform the staples which is movable toward the staple cartridge to clamp tissue therebetween. The anvil is movable away from the staple cartridge to release the tissue after the tissue has been stapled. The stapling instrument further comprises a lockout configured to prevent the anvil from being moved toward the staple cartridge once again until the staple cartridge has been replaced with an unfired staple cartridge.

Claims (44)

1. A replaceable assembly for use with a circular stapling instrument, wherein said replaceable assembly comprises:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a tissue-supporting deck; and

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure drive comprising a trocar shaft, wherein said anvil is attachable to said trocar shaft, wherein said trocar shaft is movable between an extended position and a retracted position to move said anvil between an open position and a closed position, wherein said trocar shaft extends above said deck when said trocar shaft is in said extended position, and wherein trocar shaft is retracted below said deck when said trocar shaft is in said retracted position;

a firing drive movable toward said deck between an unfired position and a fired position to eject said staples from said staple cavities once said trocar shaft is in said retracted position, wherein said closure drive is movable to said extended position to re-open said anvil after said staples have been deformed against said anvil; and

means for preventing said trocar shaft from being returned to said retracted position after said firing drive has ejected said staples from said staple cavities.

2. The replaceable assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a connector configured to releasably attach said cartridge body to the circular stapling instrument.

3. The replaceable assembly of claim 2 , wherein said trocar shaft comprises a proximal end drive end operably engageable with a closure drive of the circular stapling instrument.

4. The replaceable assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a firing drive lock configured to prevent said firing drive from being moved into said fired position before said anvil is moved into said closed position.

5. The replaceable assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a closure lockout configured to prevent said closure drive from being moved into said retracted position prior to said anvil being attached to said trocar shaft.

6. A replaceable assembly for use with a circular stapling instrument, said replaceable assembly comprising:

a frame comprising a distal end;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

a closure drive comprising a trocar shaft movable between an extended position and a retracted position to move an anvil between an open position and a closed position;

a firing drive movable toward said distal end between an unfired position and a fired position to eject said staples from said staple cavities once said trocar shaft is in said retracted position, wherein said closure drive is movable to said extended position to re-open the anvil after said staples have been fully deformed against the anvil; and

means for preventing said trocar shaft from being returned to said retracted position after said trocar shaft has been moved into said extended position to re-open the anvil.

7. The replaceable assembly of claim 6 , further comprising a connector configured to releasably attach said cartridge body to the circular stapling instrument.

8. The replaceable assembly of claim 7 , wherein said trocar shaft comprises a proximal end drive end operably engageable with a closure drive of the circular stapling instrument.

9. The replaceable assembly of claim 6 , further comprising a firing drive lock configured to prevent said firing drive from being moved into said fired position before said trocar shaft is moved into said retracted position.

10. The replaceable assembly of claim 6 , wherein the anvil is attachable to the trocar shaft, and wherein said replaceable assembly further comprises a closure lockout configured to prevent said trocar shaft from being moved into said retracted position prior to the anvil being attached to said trocar shaft.

11. A replaceable assembly for use with a circular stapling instrument, said replaceable assembly comprising:

a frame comprising a distal end;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure drive comprising a trocar shaft movable between an extended position and a retracted position to move said anvil between an open position and a closed position;

a firing drive movable toward said distal end between an unfired position and a fired position to eject said staples from said staple cavities once said trocar shaft is in said retracted position, wherein said closure drive is movable to said extended position to re-open said anvil after said staples have been fully deformed against said anvil; and

a spent cartridge lockout configured to prevent said trocar shaft from being returned to said retracted position after said trocar shaft has been moved into said extended position to re-open said anvil.

12. The replaceable assembly of claim 11 , further comprising a connector configured to releasably attach said cartridge body to the circular stapling instrument.

13. The replaceable assembly of claim 12 , wherein said trocar shaft comprises a proximal end drive end operably engageable with a closure drive of the circular stapling instrument.

14. The replaceable assembly of claim 11 , further comprising a firing drive lock configured to prevent said firing drive from being moved into said fired position before said trocar shaft is moved into said retracted position.

15. The replaceable assembly of claim 11 , wherein said anvil is attachable to the trocar shaft, and wherein said replaceable assembly further comprises a closure lockout configured to prevent said trocar shaft from being moved into said retracted position prior to said anvil being attached to said trocar shaft.

16. A replaceable assembly for use with a stapling instrument, said replaceable assembly comprising:

a distal end;

an annular cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure drive comprising a trocar shaft movable between an extended position and a retracted position to move said anvil between an open position and a closed position;

a firing drive movable toward said distal end from an unfired position to a fired position to eject said staples from said staple cavities once said trocar shaft is in said retracted position, wherein said closure drive is movable to said extended position to re-open said anvil after said staples have been fully deformed against said anvil; and

a spent cartridge lockout configured to prevent said trocar shaft from being returned to said retracted position after said staples have been ejected from said staple cavities and said trocar shaft has been moved into said extended position to re-open said anvil.
