Abstract

A surgical stapling instrument is disclosed. The stapling instrument comprises a staple cartridge including a circular array of staple cavities defined therein and an anvil configured to deform the staples. The stapling instrument further comprises a closure drive configured to position the anvil relative to the staple cartridge and a firing drive configured to eject the staples from the staple cartridge. The closure drive includes a shaft which is extendable above the staple cartridge to permit the anvil to be attached to the shaft. In various instances, the stapling instrument is configured and arranged such that the anvil cannot be attached to the shaft unless the shaft is moved into a fully-extended position above the staple cartridge.

Claims (27)

1. An end effector of a circular stapling instrument, said end effector comprising:

a frame;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

a closure drive, comprising:

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a trocar shaft movable between an extended position and a retracted position; and

a clip attached to said trocar shaft, wherein said frame is configured to bias said clip into an attachment configuration when said trocar shaft is in said extended position and permit said anvil to be attached to said trocar shaft, and wherein said clip is configured to resiliently expand into a blocking configuration when said trocar shaft is in said retracted position and prevent said anvil from being attached to said trocar shaft.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said trocar shaft comprises an attachment shoulder, wherein said anvil comprises a plurality of attachment arms configured to engage said attachment shoulder when said clip is in said attachment configuration.

3. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein said clip is configured to bias said attachment arms away from said attachment shoulder when said clip is in said blocking configuration.

4. An end effector of a circular stapling instrument, said end effector comprising:

a frame;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

a closure drive, comprising:

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a trocar shaft movable between a retracted position and a fully-extended position; and

means for blocking the attachment of said anvil to said trocar shaft when said trocar shaft is not in said fully-extended position and for pushing said anvil away from said trocar shaft when said trocar shaft is not in said fully-extended position.

5. An end effector of a circular stapling instrument, said end effector comprising:

a frame;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

a closure drive, comprising:

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a trocar shaft extendable between a retracted position and a threshold position; and

a connector configured to prevent said anvil from being attached to said trocar shaft when said trocar shaft is not extended to said threshold position, wherein said connector is configured to bias said anvil away from said trocar shaft when said trocar shaft is not extended to said threshold position, and wherein said connector is configured to permit said anvil to be attached to said trocar shaft when said trocar shaft is extended to said threshold position.

6. The end effector of claim 5 , wherein said connector comprises a clip.
