Abstract

Embodiments of the invention include a gaming device that has a video display. When the player initiates the game, an animation is shown. If the game had a losing outcome, the animation is very short and allows the player to quickly try for a win. If instead the game has a winning outcome the gaming device spins reels or otherwise shows the player how much he or she has won. The animation may also indicate progress toward a mystery jackpot or a group mystery jackpot.

providing game play credits to a player of the gaming device in response to receipt of value from a player via at least one of a currency acceptor, a ticket acceptor, an electronic account, and a coin acceptor;

generating a graphical indication on a display on a screen at each of the connected gaming devices that indicates a movement of an icon between a start position and an end position, the mystery jackpot being awarded at least when the icon reaches the end position:

animating the icon each time a wager is made at one of the gaming devices:

moving the icon toward the end position as wagers are made at the gaming devices;

accepting a wager from the game play credits at one of the gaming devices jn response to a player actuated input at the gaming device;

initiating a game on the one gaming device in response to a player actuated input at the one gaming device;

animating the icon in a first manner on each screen when a game is initiated that indicates the game outcome is a winning outcome and animating the icon in a second manner when a game is initiated that indicates the game outcome is a losing outcome, display of the first manner being substantially longer than for the second manner,

wherein the first and second manners of animation are displayed before the outcome of the game on the one gaming device; and

animating the icon in a third manner on each screen when one of the gaming devices triggers the mystery jackpot award;

displaying the outcome of a winning game on the one gaming device for a substantially longer time than displaying the outcome of a losing game; and

printing a ticket on a ticket printer associated with the gaming device that reflects the balance of the game play credits responsive to activation of an actuator associated with the gaming device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing the player of the game an opportunity to suppress the first and second manners of animation.

3. A gaming system comprising:

a plurality of gaming devices connected in a network, each gaming device including:

a housing;

a display device supported by the housing;

a plurality of input devices supported by the housing, the plurality of input devices including at least one of a currency acceptor, a ticket acceptor, and a coin acceptor and at least one of: a touch screen and at least one button;

a ticket printer for printing a ticket that reflects the balance of game play credits on the gaming device responsive to activation of an actuator associated with the gaming device; and

an electronic processing device supported by the housing, the electronic processing device configured to operate with the display device and the plurality of input devices to: receive a monetary value that is reflected on a credit meter associated with the gaming device, receive, via at least one of the plurality of input devices, a wager based at least in part on the monetary value; and for a single play of a game on each gaming device;

accept a wager from the credits on the credit meter at one of the gaming devices in response to a player actuated input at the gaming device;

initiate a game in response to a player actuated input at the one gaming device;

generate a graphical indication on the display device at each of the connected gaming devices that indicates movement of an icon between a start position and an end position, the mystery jackpot being awarded at least when the icon reaches the end position;

animate the icon each time a wager is made at one of the gaming devices;

move the icon toward the end position as wagers are made at the gaming devices;

animate the icon in a first manner on each screen when a game is initiated that indicates the game outcome is a winning outcome and animating the icon in a second manner when a game is initiated that indicates the game outcome is a losing outcome, display of the first manner being substantially longer than for the second manner,

wherein the first and second manners of animation are displayed before the outcome of the game on the one gaming device; and

animate the icon in a third manner on each screen when one of the gaming devices triggers the mystery jackpot award; and

display the outcome of a winning game on the one gaming device for a substantially longer time than displaying the outcome of a losing game.

4. A method of operating a gaming system having a plurality of gaming devices connected in a network, each gaming device including:

a housing;

a display device supported by the housing;

a plurality of input devices supported by the housing, the plurality of input devices at least one of a currency acceptor, a ticket acceptor, and a coin acceptor and at least one of: a touch screen and at least one button; a ticket printer for printing a ticket that reflects the balance of game play credits on the gaming device responsive to activation of an actuator associated with the gaming device; and an electronic processing device supported by the housing, the electronic processing device configured to operate with the display device and the plurality of input devices to: receive a monetary value that is reflected on a credit meter associated with the gaming device, receive, via at least one of the plurality of input devices, a wager based at least in part on the monetary value, the method comprising:

generating a graphical indication on a display on the display device at each of the connected gaming devices that indicates movement of an icon between a start position and an end position, the mystery jackpot being awarded at least when the icon reaches the end position;

animating the icon each time a wager is made at one of the gaming devices;

moving the icon toward the end position as wagers are made at the gaming devices:

animating the icon in a first manner on each screen when a game is initiated that indicates the game outcome is a winning outcome and animating the icon in a second manner when a game is initiated that indicates the game outcome is a losing outcome, display of the first manner being substantially longer than for the second manner,

wherein the first and second manners of animation are displayed before the outcome of the game on the one gaming device; and

animating the icon in a third manner on each screen when one of the gaming devices triggers the mystery jackpot award; and
