Abstract

Selective high-frequency spinal cord modulation for inhibiting pain with reduced side effects and associated systems and methods are disclosed. In particular embodiments, a programmer has instructions that, in response to an input, select between a paresthesia-inducing therapy program that includes a frequency of less than 1,500 Hz, and a non-paresthesia-inducing therapy program that includes a frequency in range from 1.5 kHz to 50 kHz.

Claims (30)

1. A spinal cord stimulation system, comprising:

a signal generator programmable to generate an electrical therapy signal;

an implantable signal delivery device having one or more electrical contacts, wherein the signal delivery device is electrically coupleable to the signal generator, and wherein the signal delivery device is designed to deliver the electrical therapy signal to the patient's spinal cord region; and

a programmer wirelessly coupleable to the signal generator,

wherein the programmer includes programming instructions contained in memory, and that, in response to an input, select between at least two therapy programs, wherein a first of the therapy programs is a paresthesia-inducing therapy program, and a second of the therapy programs is a non-paresthesia-inducing therapy program,

wherein therapy signal parameters for the first therapy program include a first frequency of less than 1,500 Hz and a paresthesia-inducing first amplitude in a first amplitude range from 3 mA to 10 mA, and

wherein therapy signal parameters for the second therapy program include a second frequency in a frequency range from 1.5 kHz to 50 kHz, a pulse width in a pulse width range from 10 microseconds to 333 microseconds, and a non-paresthesia-inducing second amplitude in a second amplitude range from 0.1 mA to 20 mA.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal generator is programmable to generate and deliver the at least two therapy programs to a target location in the patient's spinal cord region via an electrode of the signal delivery device having a position contained in memory as corresponding to the target location.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein:

the input is a first input;

in response to the first input, the instructions select the first program;

in response to a second input, the instructions select the second program; and

signals delivered in accordance with the first and second programs do not temporally overlap with each other.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the electrode of the signal delivery device has a position contained in memory as corresponding to a vertebral level between T9 and T12, inclusively.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the electrode of the signal delivery device is configured to have a position lateral from a midline of the patient's spinal cord so as to be proximate to a dorsal root, dorsal root entry zone, or dorsal root ganglion.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the therapy signal parameters for the first program include a first electrode having a position contained in memory as corresponding to a first target location, and the therapy signal parameters for the second program include a second electrode having a position contained in memory as corresponding to a second target location.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first target location and the second target location are the same.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal generator is programmable to generate and deliver the paresthesia-inducing therapy program or the non-paresthesia-inducing therapy program to a thoracic vertebral level in the patient via an electrode of the signal delivery device having a position contained in memory as corresponding to the thoracic vertebral level.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the frequency range for the second therapy program is from 3 kHz to 20 kHz.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second frequency is 10 kHz.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second amplitude range is from 0.5 mA to 10 mA.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second amplitude range is from 1 mA to 6 mA.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second amplitude range is from 0.5 mA to 4 mA.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second amplitude range is from 1 mA to 4 mA.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second amplitude range is from 2 mA to 3.5 mA.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the pulse width range is from 25 microseconds to 166 microseconds.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the pulse width range is from 30 microseconds to 35 microseconds.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second frequency range is from 5 kHz to 15 kHz, and wherein the second amplitude range is from 0.5 mA to 10 mA.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second frequency is 10 kHz, and the second amplitude range is from 0.5 mA to 4 mA, and wherein the pulse width range is from 30 microseconds to 35 microseconds.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal generator is implantable.
