Abstract

An example disclosed printer includes communications circuitry configured to facilitate communications with a network; and processing circuitry configured to: initiate a connection between the printer and a server via the network; transmit data to the server using the connection, wherein the server is to generate an instruction for the printer based on the data; and perform a printing operation using the instruction received from the server.

Claims (57)

1. A printer comprising:

communications circuitry configured to facilitate communications with a network; and

processing circuitry configured to:

initiate a connection between the printer and a server via the network;

cause the communications circuitry to transmit, to the server using the connection and prior to a format for a print job being generated by the server, data usable by the server to generate the format for the print job, wherein:

the data includes information indicative of a physical location of the printer; and

the server is to generate the format based on the physical location;

receive, from the server, the format generated by the server using the data; and

perform a printing operation associated with the print job using the format received from the server.

2. A printer as defined in claim 1 , wherein performing the printing operation comprises generating an image on media in accordance with the format.

3. A printer as defined in claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to perform a display operation using the format received from the server.

4. A printer as defined in claim 1 , further comprising an interface to obtain additional data, wherein the additional data comprises information captured by a peripheral device coupled to the interface, wherein the server is to generate the format based on the additional data.

5. A printer as defined in claim 4 , wherein the peripheral device is a scanner, a reader, a tag, a scale, a keyboard, a touchscreen device, or a signature pad.

6. A printer as defined in claim 1 , wherein the printer is not connected to the network via an intermediate computer terminal.

7. A printer as defined in claim 1 , further comprising memory, wherein the data comprises information stored in the memory.

8. A printer as defined in claim 1 , wherein the data being usable by the server to generate the format for the print job comprises the data being usable to generate a visual aspect of an image to be generated in accordance with the print job.

9. A printer as defined in claim 1 , wherein:

when the physical location is a first value, the server is to generate a first format; and

when the physical location is a second value different than the first value, the server is to generate a second format different than the first format.

10. A server comprising:

communications circuitry configured to receive a connection request from a printer and establish the requested connection between the server and the printer via a network; and

processing circuitry configured to:

receive print job data associated with a print job from the printer via the connection prior to the print job being formatted, wherein the data includes a physical location of the printer;

format the print job based on the physical location received from the printer; and

transmit the formatted print job to the printer.

11. A server as defined in claim 10 , wherein the data further includes information specific to an entity associated with the printer, and the processing circuitry is configured to format the print job by incorporating the information specific to the entity into the print job.

12. A server as defined in claim 11 , wherein the information specific to the entity is a name.

13. A server as defined in claim 11 , wherein the information specific to the entity is a logo.

14. A server as defined in claim 10 , wherein the data further includes information indicative of a use of the printer, and the processing circuitry is configured to format the print job based on the use of the printer.

15. A server as defined in claim 10 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to, in response to receiving the data, retrieve information associated with the received data.

16. A server as defined in claim 15 , wherein formatting the print job based on the physical location comprises incorporating the retrieved information into the print job.

17. A server as defined in claim 10 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to:

authenticate a user based on the data; and

enable use of the printer based on the authentication.

18. A server as defined in claim 10 , wherein the printer does not use the data to perform a printing operation, and the printer is to perform the printing operation using the print job.

19. A server as defined in claim 10 , wherein:

when the physical location is a first value, the processing circuitry is to generate a first format; and

when the physical location is a second value different than the first value, the processing circuitry is to generate a second format different than first format.

20. A method comprising:

initiating a connection between a printer and a server via a network;

transmitting, by the printer and prior to a print job being formatted, data to the server via the connection, wherein:

the data is indicative of a physical location of the printer; and

the server is configured to format the print job based on the physical location of the printer;

receiving, at the printer, a format for the print job generated by the server using the data transmitted by the printer; and

performing, by the printer, a printing operation using the format received from the server.

21. A printer as defined in claim 1 , wherein the data further includes an identification of an entity operating the printer, and the server is to generate the format based on the identification of the entity.

22. A system comprising:

a printer configured to, in connection with a printing operation to be performed by the printer:

obtain data indicative of a physical location of the printer; and

transmit the data indicative of the physical location of the printer to the server prior to the format for the printing operation being generated; and

a server configured to:

receive the data from the printer;

format a print job based on the physical location of the printer; and

transmit the formatted print job to the printer,

wherein the printer is configured to:

receive the formatted print job from the server; and

generate indicia on media in accordance with the print job.
