Abstract

A hybrid sunflower, designated X4237, is disclosed. The invention relates to the seeds of hybrid sunflower X4237, to the plants of hybrid sunflower X4237 and to methods for producing a sunflower plant by crossing the cultivar X4237 with itself or another sunflower. The invention further relates to methods for producing a sunflower plant containing in its genetic material one or more transgenes and to the transgenic sunflower plants and plant parts produced by those methods and to methods for producing other hybrid sunflower derived from hybrid sunflower X4237.

Claims (17)

1. A hybrid sunflower plant designated X4237, wherein a representative sample of seed of said hybrid sunflower was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-123220.

2. A hybrid sunflower plant having all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of the sunflower plant of claim 1 .

3. A tissue culture produced from protoplasts or cells from the plant of claim 1 , wherein said cells or protoplasts are produced from a plant part selected from the group consisting of leaf, pollen, embryo, cotyledon, hypocotyl, meristematic cell root, root tip, pistil, anther, ovule, flower, shoot, stem, and petiole.

4. A sunflower plant regenerated from the tissue culture of claim 3 , wherein the plant has all of the morphological and physiological characteristics of hybrid sunflower X4237.

5. A method for producing a sunflower seed, said method comprising crossing two sunflower plants and harvesting the resultant sunflower seed, wherein at least one sunflower plant is the sunflower plant of claim 1 .

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein one of said sunflower plants is hybrid sunflower X4237 and the other is transgenic.

7. A method of producing a male sterile sunflower plant, wherein the method comprises introducing a nucleic acid molecule that confers male sterility into the sunflower plant of claim 1 .

8. A male sterile sunflower plant produced by the method of claim 7 .

9. A method of producing an herbicide resistant sunflower plant, wherein said method comprises introducing a gene conferring herbicide resistance into the plant of claim 1 , wherein the gene is selected from the group consisting of glyphosate, sulfonylurea, imidazolinone, dicamba, glufosinate, phenoxy proprionic acid, L-phosphinothricin, cyclohexone, cyclohexanedione, triazine, and benzonitrile.

10. An herbicide resistant sunflower plant produced by the method of claim 9 .

11. A method of producing a pest or insect resistant sunflower plant, wherein said method comprises introducing a gene conferring pest or insect resistance into the plant of claim 1 .

12. A pest or insect resistant sunflower plant produced by the method of claim 11 .

13. The sunflower plant of claim 12 , wherein the gene encodes a Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxin.

14. A method of producing a disease resistant sunflower plant, wherein said method comprises introducing a gene conferring disease resistance into the plant of claim 1 .

15. A disease resistant sunflower plant produced by the method of claim 14 .

16. A method of producing a sunflower plant wherein said method comprises introducing a transgene into the plant of claim 1 .

17. A sunflower plant produced by the method of claim 16 .
